  • Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant ’ 1

  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – VIII. SAINT PIUS V, POPE AND CONFESSOR

505. Prayers - Ant. Pius, admirable Shepherd, ever mindful of thy sheep, before the highest Judge do thou intercede for all believers.

Let us pray.

O God, who in order to crush them that hate Thy Church and to restore Thy solemn worship, didst vouchsafe to choose Blessed Pius to be Thy great High Priest: grant us to be secure under his protection and so to continue in Thy service, that, having overcome all the wiles of our adversaries, we may enjoy a perpetual peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

An indulgence of 300 days (Holy Office, Sept. 18, 1916).

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” - IV. “PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY PRIESTS” – (A) To obtain Holiness of life.

743. Prayers to be said by Priests before and after making their own sacramental confession -

a) Before confession - Accept my confession, O most tender and merciful Lord Jesus Christ, my soul's only hope of salvation; and give me, Thy priest, I pray, true contrition and tears to mine eyes, that I may weep night and day for all my shortcomings in humility and cleanness of heart. My Lord and God, accept my prayers. Saviour of the world, good Jesu, Who gavest Thyself to the death of the Cross to save sinners, look upon me, a miserable sinner, calling upon Thy holy Name, and regard not my wickedness in such wise as to forget Thy goodness; and if I have done that which deserves Thy condemnation, Thou hast not lost that whereby Thou art wont to save. Spare me, therefore, Thou who art my Saviour, and have pity on my sinful soul. Loose its bonds, heal its wounds. O most gracious Lord, by the merits of Thy pure and inviolate Mother Mary ever Virgin, whom Thou hast bequeathed especially unto Thy priests to be their Mother, and by the merits of all Thy Saints, send out Thy light and Thy truth into my soul, and show me all my shortcomings in truth which I am bound to confess, and assist and teach me to unfold them fully and with a contrite heart: Who livest and reignest God, for ever and ever. Amen.

b) After confession - Let this my confession, I beseech Thee, O Lord, be pleasing and acceptable in Thy sight, by the merits of Thy blessed and ever Virgin Mother Mary and of all Thy Saints; and whatsoever is wanting, now or at any other time, in sufficient contrition, or in sincerity and integrity of confession, doThou, of Thy loving kindness and mercy, supply and deign thereby to hold me more fully and perfectly absolved in heaven: Who livest and reignest God world without end. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., Aug. 19, 1882; S. P. Ap., Sept. 18, 1936)

There is no current indulgence that is specific to prayers that are to be said by priest. There’s also no current indulgence for prayers before or after confession (although Acts of Contrition do carry a current indulgence). So I will place these prayers under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” – VII Prayers to be said by students

765. A Prayer - O most holy Virgin Mary, who didst bear Jesus our Saviour and didst shed the everlasting Light upon the world, O Mother of divine knowledge, whose merciful intercession hath procured the grace of increasing in knowledge and piety for countless minds that were rude and ignorant, I choose thee as the guide and patroness of my studies.

By thine intercession, O Mother of fruitful studies, may the Holy Spirit fill my spirit with light and fortitude, prudence and humility; may He give me a good will, intelligence, memory and ability in sufficient measure, and above all, a spirit of docility both in mind and heart, that I may proceed in all things according to the counsels of divine Wisdom.

Defend me, good Mother, against the spirit of pride and presumption, of vain curiosity and instability; keep me from every occasion of stumbling, from all erroneous opinion, and from all things that might corrupt my faith and disturb the clearness of my understanding, the purity of my heart, and the peace of my soul.

Grant, O Mary, that, under thy protection, I may ever be submissive to the directions and teachings of Holy Church, my mother, and may advance in the way of truth and virtue surely, courageously and without wavering; at length may I attain to the knowledge, the love and the everlasting possession of Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, April 26, 1907, exhib. April 27, 1907; S. P. Ap., Sept. 18, 1933)

There is no current indulgence specifically for Prayers to be said by students. But, because this prayer addresses the Virgin Mary, it would apply for an indulgence under Grant 17. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
