Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” – V. Prayers
53. Omnipotence of the Father, help my frailty and save me from the depths of misery.
Wisdom of the Son, direct all my thoughts, words and deeds.
Love of the Holy Ghost, be Thou the source of all the operations of my mind, that they may ever be conformed to God's good pleasure.
An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., March 15, 1890; S. P. Ap., Sept. 12, 1936).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II. “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” – IV. Prayers
370. Immaculate Mother of God, Queen of heaven, Mother of mercy, Advocate and Refuge of sinners, behold, I, enlightened and inspired by the graces obtained for me abundantly from the divine treasury through thy maternal affection, resolve this day and always to place my heart in thy hands to be consecrated to Jesus.
To thee, therefore, most Blessed Virgin, in the presence of the nine choirs of Angels and all the Saints, I now give it. Do thou, in my name, consecrate it to Jesus; and out of the filial confidence which I hereby make profession of, I am certain that now and always thou wilt do all thou canst to bring it to pass that my heart may ever wholly belong to Jesus, and may imitate perfectly the example of the Saints, and in particular that of Saint Joseph, thy most pure Spouse. Amen (Bl. Vincent Pallotti).
An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., July 27, 1920 and Sept. 12, 1936).
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XI. SAINT PAUL OF THE CROSS, CONFESSOR
509. A Prayer - O glorious Saint Paul of the Cross, on earth thou wast a mirror of innocence and a model of penance! O hero of saintliness, chosen by God to meditate day and night on the bitter Passion of His only begotten Son, and to spread devotion thereto by word and deed as well as by means of thy religious family! O Apostle, mighty in word and work, thou didst spend thy life in bringing back to the foot of the Cross the erring souls of countless unfortunate sinners! Do thou mercifully look down once more from heaven upon my poor soul and hear my petitions. Obtain for me so great a love of Jesus suffering, that by constant meditation on His Passion I may make His sufferings mine. Let me realize in the deep Wounds of my Saviour the wickedness of my transgressions, and obtain from them, as from the fountain of salvation, the grace of bitter tears and an effectual resolution to imitate thee in thy penance, if I have not followed thine example of innocence. Obtain for me, also, Saint Paul, the favor that I now especially ask of thee, as I humbly kneel before thee… Obtain, moreover, for our Holy Mother the Church, victory over Her foes; for sinners, the gift of conversion; for heretics, the grace of returning to the unity of the Catholic faith. Finally, intercede for me that I may, by the grace of God, die a holy death, and come at last to enjoy with thee His blessed Presence in heaven for all eternity. Amen.
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence, once a month, for the daily recitation of this prayer in a spirit of devotion (Pius IX, Rescript in his own hand, April 24, 1853 and April 20, 1868; S. P. Ap., Sept. 12, 1933).
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER VIII. ‘FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED’ – VI. Prayers
597. O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit; deliver them out of the lion's mouth, lest hell should swallow them up, lest they fall into the outer darkness; but let Thy standard-bearer, Saint Michael, bring them back into Thy holy light, which Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and to his seed (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, if this prayer is devoutly said daily (S. P. Ap., Sept. 12, 1935).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
NOTE: Also according to Grant 29 (For the Faithful departed) prayers may be prayed at a cemetery for a partial indulgence (applicable only to the dead). It doesn’t specify any kind of prayer, so it could be that you could choose to pray this most fitting prayer.
CHAPTER VIII. ‘FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED’ – VI. Prayers
598. O God, who hast commanded us to honor our father and our mother; in Thy mercy have pity on the souls of my father and mother, (or, the soul of my father, or, the soul of my mother,) and forgive them their trespasses (or, forgive him his trespasses, or, forgive her her trespasses); and make me to see them (or, him, or, her) again in the joy of everlasting brightness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if the devout recitation of this prayer be continued every day for a month (S. P. Ap, Sept. 12, 1935)
Refer to the above (# 597) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding mental prayer. (Also for the note regarding Grant 29 for prayers for the faithful departed)
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” – V. PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY RELIGIOUS – VI Prayers to be said by teachers
759. An Invocation - Teach me goodness and discipline and knowledge, O Lord: for I have believed Thy commandments (Ps. 118, 66). An indulgence of 300 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, May 14, 1908; S. C. Ind., Sept. 12, 1908).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
