Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations
75. Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, light of the world, I adore Thee; for Thee I live, for Thee I die. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, June 19, 1909; S. C. of the Holy Office, July 1, 1909; S. P. Ap., Sept. 20, 1933).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXIV. SAINT JOHN OF MATHA, CONFESSOR
534. A Prayer - Glorious Saint John of Matha, thou wast inflamed with an ardent love of God and a tender compassion toward thy neighbor, and therefore wast chosen by God Himself found the famous Order of the Most Holy Trinity wherein thou didst spend thy days in glorifying this venerable mystery and in rescuing unhappy Christians from bondage; do thou obtain for us the grace to pass our days in like manner, glorifying the Most Holy Trinity and doing good to our neighbor with the deeds of Christian charity, that so we may hereafter obtain the happy lot of rejoicing in heaven in the Beatific Vision of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days once a day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this prayer has been devoutly recited every day for a month (S. C. Ind, March 16, 1897; S. P. Ap., Sept. 20, 1931).
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LIV. SAINT FRANCES OF ROME, WIDOW
570. A Prayer – Bright jewel of the Order of Saint Benedict, illustrious Saint Frances of Rome, thou who wast led by divine Providence through various stations in life, that thou mightest be a pattern of every virtue, to maidens, to matrons and to widows, pray for us to our divine Saviour that we may be detached from the vanities of the world and may be able, under the guiding hand of our Guardian Angel, to grow daily in the love of God, of His Church and of our neighbor, and finally to be made partakers in heaven of thy felicity. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if the devout repetition of this prayer is performed daily throughout an entire month (S. P. Ap., April 7, 1919 and Sept. 21, 1934).
Refer to the above (# 534) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding prayers in honor of the saints.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
