CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IV. - “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” - IX. Pious Practices

173. The Offering of Holy Mass in Reparation - The faithful, who make an offering and have the sacrifice of the Mass said in reparation for the insults offered by mankind to the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, may gain: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, Nov. 15, 1907, exhib., Nov. 19, 1907).

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. IV. “THE MOST PURE HEART OF MARY” - III. An Act of Consecration

391. Queen of the most holy Rosary, help of Christians, refuge of the human race, victorious in all the battles of God, we prostrate ourselves in supplication before thy throne, in the sure hope of obtaining mercy and of receiving grace and timely aid in our present calamities, not through any merits of our own on which we do not rely, but only through the immense goodness of thy mother's Heart. In thee and in thy Immaculate Heart, at this grave hour of human history, do we put our trust; to thee we consecrate ourselves, not only with all of Holy Church, which is the mystical body of thy Son Jesus, and which is suffering in so many of her members, being subjected to manifold tribulations and persecutions, but also with the whole world, torn by discords, agitated with hatred, the victim of its own iniquities. Be thou moved by the sight of such material and moral degradation, such sorrows, such anguish, so many tormented souls in danger of eternal loss! Do thou, O Mother of mercy, obtain for us from God a Christ-like reconciliation of the nations, as well as those graces which can convert the souls of men in an instant, those graces which prepare the way and make certain the long desired coming of peace on earth. O Queen of peace, pray for us, and grant peace unto the world in the truth, the justice, and the charity of Christ. Above all, give us peace in our hearts, so that the kingdom of God may spread its borders in the tranquillity of order. Accord thy protection to unbelievers and to all those who lie within the shadow of death; cause the Sun of Truth to rise upon them; may they be enabled to join with us in repeating before the Saviour of the world: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.” Give peace to the nations that are separated from us by error or discord, and in a special manner to those peoples who profess a singular devotion toward thee; bring them back to Christ's one fold, under the one true Shepherd. Obtain full freedom for the holy Church of God; defend her from her enemies; check the ever-increasing torrent of immorality; arouse in the faithful a love of purity, a practical Christin life, and an apostolic zeal, so that the multitude of those who serve God may increase in merit and in number. Finally, even as the Church and all mankind were once consecrated to the Heart of thy Son Jesus, because He was for all those who put their hope in Him an inexhaustible source of victory and salvation, so in like manner do we consecrate ourselves forever to thee also and to thy Immaculate Heart, O Mother of us and Queen of the world; may thy love and patronage hasten the day when the kingdom of God shall be victorious and all the nations, at peace with God and with one another, shall call thee blessed and intone with thee, from the rising of the sun to its going down, the everlasting "Magnificat" of glory, of love, of gratitude to the Heart of Jesus, in which alone we can find truth, life, and peace (Pope Pius XII). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this act of consecration is devoutly repeated every day for a month (Pius XII, Rescript from the Secretariate of State, Nov. 17, 1942, document exhibited, Nov. 19, 1942).

Even though personal consecration may offer an additional plenary indulgence under a General Grant (likely under General Grant 4) only family consecrations offer a specific and plenary indulgence. otherwise this prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – XX. OUR LADY QUEEN OF APOSTLES

437. An Invocation - Queen of the Apostles, pray for us. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Nov. 20, 1930).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER VI. “THE HOLY ANGELS” – Art. I. General Invocations of the Holy Angels

440. An Invocation - Ye Angles and Archangels, ye Thrones and Dominations, ye Principalities and Powers, ye Virtues of the heavens, Cherubim and Seraphim, bless ye the Lord for ever (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this invocation has been recited with devotion every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Nov. 20, 1934).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 437) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER VIII. ‘FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED’ – III. Psalms and Sequence

585. The faithful who devoutly recite the 129th Psalm, De profundis or who say the Our Father, Hail Mary and the versicle Eternal rest, in supplication for the faithful departed, may gain: An indulgence of 3 years; An indulgence of 5 years every day in November; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this pious practice is repeated daily for a month (Apostolic Brief, Aug 11 1736; S. P. Ap., May 29, 1933 and Nov. 20, 1940).

This indulgence, as a whole, is ‘Notwithstanding.’ However, parts of this indulgence are still covered under current Grants. The 129th Psalm (De profundis) offers a partial indulgence as an act of contrition under Grant 9. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, especially in preparation for sacramental confession, devoutly recite an act of contrition, according to any legitimate formula (e.g... the psalm De profundis...).

The versicle ‘Eternal Rest,’offers a partial indulgence under Grant 29. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite lauds or vespers from the Office of the Dead or the prayer Eternal rest.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
