CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – IV. OUR LADY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS

412. A Prayer - Virgin most powerful, loving helper of the Christian people, how great thanks do we not owe thee for the assistance thou didst give our fathers, who, when they were threatened by the Turkish infidels, invoked thy maternal help by the devout recitation of thy Rosary! From heaven thou didst see their deadly peril; thou didst hear their voices imploring thy compassion; and their humble prayers, enjoined by the great Pope, Saint Pius the Fifth, were acceptable unto thee, and thou camest quickly to deliver them. Grant, dear Mother, that in like manner the prolonged sighs of the holy Bride of Christ in these our days may come to thy throne and engage thy pity; do thou, moved anew to compassion for her, rise once again to deliver her from the many foes who encompass her on every side.

Even now from the four quarters of the earth there arises to thy throne that loved prayer, to win thy mercy in these troublous times even as of old. Unhappily our sins hinder, or at least, retard its effect. Wherefore, dear Mother, obtain for us true sorrow for our sins and a firm resolution to face death itself rather than return to our former iniquities; we are sore distressed that, through our fault, thy help, of which we stand in such extreme need, should be denied or come too late.

Rise, then, O Mary, incline thyself to hear the prayers of the whole Catholic world, and beat flat to the ground the pride of those wretched men, who in their insolence blaspheme Almighty God and would destroy His Church, against which, according to the infallible words of Christ, the gates of hell shall never prevail. Let it be seen once more that when thou dost arise to protect the Church, her victory is sure. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., June 20, 1891; S. P. Ap., Nov. 16, 1935).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XXIV. EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE

690. The faithful who examine their consciences and sincerely detest their sins together with a firm purpose of amendment are granted: An indulgence of 500 days; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they perform this exercise daily for a month (S. P. Ap., Nov. 16, 1938).

This traditional indulgence is nearly identical to current indulgence Grant 9. The specific reference in the 'Manuel ofIndulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, especially in preparation for sacramental confession, examine their conscience with the purpose of amendment;

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II. “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” - III. Devout Practices

367. a) The faithful who on the first Saturday of each month perform some special exercises of devotion in honor of the B. V. M. Immaculate, in order to make atonement for the blasphemies whereby the name and prerogatives of the same Blessed Virgin are reviled, may gain: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. C. Holy Off. June 13, 1912)

b) Those who once in their lifetime perform such a devout exercise on the first Saturdays of eight successive months may gain, without prejudice to the above plenary indulgence: A plenary indulgence at the hour of death, if, after confession and Communion, or at least being duly contrite, they invoke with their lips, if possible, otherwise in their hearts, the most holy Name of Jesus, and accept death with resignation from the Hand of God as the due punishment of their sins (Benedict XV, Rescript in his own hand, Nov. 9, 1920, exhib. Nov. 17, 1920).

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

In regards to receiving a plenary indulgence at the point of death, current Grant 12 outlines such conditions, but those conditions are not limited to only this practice.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XI. SAINT PAUL OF THE CROSS, CONFESSOR

510. A Prayer - O glorious Saint Paul of the Cross, who, by meditating on the Passion of Jesus Christ, didst attain to so high a degree of holiness on earth and of happiness in heaven, and, by preaching the same Passion, didst offer anew to the world the most certain cure for all its ills, obtain for us the grace to keep it ever deeply engraved in our hearts, that so we may be able to reap the same fruits both in time and in eternity. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the daily devout repetition of this prayer for a month (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, March 26, 1904; exhib. Sept. 17, 1904; S. P. Ap., Nov. 18, 1935).

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
