  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VII. “THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations

231. Glory, love and thanksgiving be to the Sacred Heart of Jesus! An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. Ind., Jan. 8, 1908; S. P. Ap., Nov. 15, 1927)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.

296. Our Lady of Lourdes (of the Pillar, or under another title approved by ecclesiastical authority), pray for us. An indulgence of 300 days (Apostolic Brief, June 25, 1902; S. C Ind., Nov. 9, 1907 and Jan. 23, 1907; S. P. Ap., Nov. 15, 1927)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 231) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II. “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” - III. Devout Practices

365. The faithful who spend some time in devout prayers or meditations in honor of the B. V. M. Immaculate, on the first Saturday or Sunday of each month with the intention of persevering in the same practice for the space of twelve months, may gain: A plenary indulgence, on the usual conditions, on each first Saturday or Sunday (S. C. Ind., July 1, 1905; S. P. Ap., Nov. 15 1927)

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” - IV. “PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY PRIESTS” – (A) To obtain Holiness of life.

740. A Prayer - Almighty and merciful God, graciously attend to my humble prayers; and make me, Thy servant, whom Thou hast appointed to dispense Thy heavenly mysteries, through no merits of mine own, but only of the infinite bounty of Thy mercy, a worthy minister at Thy sacred altar, that what is set forth by my voice may be confirmed by Thy hallowing grace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this prayer has been repeated daily for a month (S. P. Ap., Nov. 15, 1936).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” - IV. “PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY PRIESTS” – (A) To obtain Holiness of life.

741. A Prayer - O Almighty God, let Thy grace assist us, that we who have undertaken the office of Priesthood, may be able to wait upon Thee worthily and devoutly, in all purity, and with a good conscience. And if we cannot live in so great innocency of life as we ought to do, grant to us at the least worthily to lament the sins that we have committed; and in the spirit of humility, and with the full purpose of a good will, to serve Thee more earnestly for the time to come. Through Christ our lord. Amen (The Imitation of Christ, book IV, chap. xi, n. 7). An indulgence of 500 days (S. P. Ap., Nov. 15, 1936).

Refer to the above (# 740) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding mental prayer.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” – XIV. A VISIT TO A CHURCH TO BE MADE BY DEAF-MUTES AND THEIR INSTRUCTORS

772. - Catholic deaf-mutes and their teachers and instructors, who devoutly visit any church or public oratory on the XI Sunday after Pentecost, are granted: A plenary indulgence, if in addition they have obtained the pardon of their sins, have received holy Communion, and have devoutly prayed for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff (S. P. Ap., Nov. 15, 1943)

The 11th Sunday after pentecost has a liturgical focus on healing. As for this indulgence, this concept continues today, but not as an indulgence. (therefore, technically, this indulgence is ‘Notwithstanding’.)For the deaf and the mute, a norm has been created so that they should be able to gain any indulgence that is currently available.

The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: Norm 26. Both the deaf and the mute can gain indulgences attached to public prayers if, together with the other faithful praying in the same place, they devoutly raise their mind and affections to God; regarding private prayers it is sufficient for them to recite the prayers mentally or express them with signs, or simply to read them without pronouncing the words.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
