  • Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under Grant 15.

  • Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant ’ 1

  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VIII. “JESUS CHRIST THE KING” – II. Devout Exercise

270. The faithful, who take part in a public novena or tiduum held immediately before the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King in honor of the same may gain: An indulgence of 10 years each day; A plenary indulgence, provided that they have been present at five of the exercises of the novena or at the entire triduum, and moreover go to confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the Holy Father's intention.

Those who make a private novena or triduum during the aforesaid time in honor of Jesus Christ the King may gain: An indulgence of 7 years once on any day of the exercises; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions at the close of the novena or triduum; but where a public exercise is held, this indulgence is available only to those who are legitimately hindered from assisting at the same (S. P. Ap., Nov. 21, 1936).

This devout practice would fall under Grant 22, for novenas. For an indulgence, novenas need to be said “publicly,” which is generally understood that a parish or diocese or the Church at large set-up/approves a novena to be said by the laity. You cannot do it only on your own or in a group that is not sets/approved by a current ecclesiastic authority. Novenas like these, known as ‘private’ novenas, are notwithstanding for an indulgence. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly assist at public novenas.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers

340. Hail Mary, etc. My Queen! my Mother! I give thee all myself, and, to show my devotion to thee, I consecrate to thee my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my entire self. Wherefore, O loving Mother, as I am thine own, keep me, defend me, as thy property and possession. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this act of oblation is repeated every day for a month (S. C. Ind., Aug, 5, 1851; S. P. Ap., Nov. 21, 1936).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.” - V. Devout Exercises

466. The faithful who in the month of March or, if that is impossible in any other month of the year, are present at public devotions in honor of St. Joseph, Spouse of the B. V. M., may gain: An indulgence of 7 years, on any day of the month: A plenary indulgence if they take part in ten such exercises at least and, moreover, go to confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of His Holiness the Pope.

Those who perform their devotions to St. Joseph privately during the month of March, may gain: An indulgence of 5 years once, on any day of the month; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they perform such devotions daily through the entire month; but if public devotions are held, this indulgence is available only to those who are lawfully hindered from taking part therein (S. C. Ind., April 27, 1865; S. P. Ap., Nov. 21, 1933).

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XV. KISSING THE RING OF THE SOVEREIGN PONTIFF, OF A CARDINAL, OF A BISHOP, AND OF A PERFECT APOSTOLIC

677. The faithful to devoutly kiss the ring,

a) Of the Sovereign Pontiff, are granted An indulgence of 300 days;

b) Of a Cardinal: An indulgence of 100 days;

c) Of a Patriarch, Archbishop, Bishop, or Prefect Apostolic: An indulgence of 50 days (S. C. of the Holy Office, March 18, 1909; S. P. Ap., Dec. 29, 1934 and Nov. 21, 1945).

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
