Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
The full written outline of the requirements for a partial or plenary indulgence, found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice, may be omitted if not all of the information is unique or notable. (You will see three dots when there is a break in text …)
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. III. “IN HONOR OF THE HOLY APOSTLES” – II. Saint Peter the Apostle
484. Prayer - O glorious Saint Peter, who, in return for thy lively and generous faith, thy profound and sincere humility, and thy burning love, wast honored by Jesus Christ with singular privileges, and, in particular, with the leadership of the other Apostles and the primacy of the whole Church, of which thou wast made the foundation stone, do thou obtain for us the grace of a lively faith, that shall not fear to profess itself openly, in its entirety and in all of its manifestations, even to the shedding of blood, if occasion should demand it, and to the sacrifice of life itself in preference to surrender. Obtain for us like-wise, a sincere loyalty to our holy mother, the Church; grant that we may ever remain most closely and sincerely united to the Roman Pontiff, who is the heir of thy faith and of thy authority, the one, true, visible Head of the Catholic Church, that mystic ark outside which there is no salvation. Grant, moreover, that we may follow, in all humility and meekness, her teaching and her counsels, and may be obedient to all her precepts, in order to be able here on earth to enjoy a peace that is sure and undisturbed and to attain one day in heaven to everlasting happiness. Amen.
V. Pray for us, Saint Peter the Apostle,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
O God, who hast given unto Thy blessed Apostle Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and the power to bind and loose: grant that we may be delivered, through the help of his intercession, from the bonds of all our sins: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.
An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, if these prayers are repeated daily with devout sentiments (Apostolic Brief, April 27, 1916; S. P. Ap., Jan. 24, 1931). NOTE: For the indulgences attached to visits to the tomb and image of St. Peter in the Vatican Basilica, see n. 774.
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS”- Art. VII. MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS – VI. Prayers for those undertaking a journey or a walk
665. In the way of peace direct us, O Lord.
We praise and venerate
All the heavenly princes,
But especially Raphael,
Faithful physician
And companion true,
Who with Heaven's power
Bindeth fast the demon.
V. God hath given His Angels charge over thee
R. To keep thee in all thy ways.
Let us pray.
O God, who didst give the blessed Archangel Raphael unto Thy servant Tobias to be his fellow-traveler; grant unto us, Thy servants, that the same may ever keep us and shield us, help us and defend us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us go forward in peace,
In the name of the Lord. Amen.
The faithful who, being about to make a journey or take a walk, recite these prayers in honor of St. Raphael the Archangel in a spirit of devotion, are granted: An indulgence of 500 days; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they recite them daily for an entire month (S. P. Ap., Jan. 25, 1946).
Although this prayer is not specifically categorized as a ‘prayer in honor of St. Raphael, I do think that it’s honor to this Archangel is clear enough that it should offer a partial indulgence according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
As for the requirement that it must be said on a journey or walk, this condition would be appropriate, bur obsolete. That is, this prayer would hold a partial indulgence anywhere, even outside of a journey.
This concluded the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
