  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

5. My God and my all. An indulgence of 300 days. (S. C. Ind., May 4, 1888; S. P. Ap., June 15, 1935)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

21. Vouchsafe, O Lord, this day (or this night) to keep us without sin. (Ambrosian Hymn). The faithful, who devoutly recite the above invocation morning or evening, are granted: An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they devoutly repeat this invocation every day for a month (S. P. Ap., June 15, 1934)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 5) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IV. - “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” – II. ACTS OF ADORATION

147. The faithful who, upon entering a church, proceed at once to the Altar of the Blessed Sacrament and make even a brief adoration there, may gain: An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., June 15, 1923).

This would be covered under current indulgence Grant 7. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit the Blessed Sacrament for adoration;

CHAPTER VIII. ‘FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED’ – II. The Office of the Dead

584. The faithful who recite with devotion:

a) Matins and Lauds may gain: An indulgence of 7 years;

b) Only one Nocturn, with Lauds: An indulgence of 5 years

c) Vespers: An indulgence of 5 years;

d) Matins, or at least one Nocturn, with Lauds daily for a month: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions. The same indulgence may be gained by those who devoutly assist at the Office of the Dead and follow the singing of the psalms and lessons, either by reading them devoutly, or with pious meditations and prayers (Apostolic Brief, April 2, 1921; S. P. Ap., June 15, 1936).

This indulgence, in a way, is still active and covered under Grant 29. It, of course, is not so picky about its parts though. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite lauds or vespers from the Office of the Dead or the prayer Eternal rest.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VI. FOR A HAPPY DEATH – III. Pious Exercises

639. Prayer – The “Recordare” - Remember, O Virgin Mother of God, when thou shalt stand in the sight of the Lord, to speak good things for us and to turn away His indignation from us.

Holy Mother, pierce me through, In my heart each wound renew, Of my Saviour crucified.

Let me to my latest breath, In my body bear the death Of that dying Son of thine.

Be to me, O Virgin, nigh Lest in flames I burn and die In that awful judgment day.

Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence, Be Thy Mother my defense, Be Thy Cross my victory.

While my body here decays, May my soul Thy goodness praise Safe in paradise with Thee. Amen.

V. Pray for us, O most sorrowful Virgin,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

Let intercession be made for us, we beseech Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, now and at the hour of our death, before the throne of Thy mercy, by the blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother, whose most holy soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the hour of Thy bitter Passion. Through Thee, Jesus Christ, Saviour of the world, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest world without end. Amen. Hail Mary, three times.

V. Our Lady of a happy death,

R. Pray for us.

V. Saint Joseph,

R. Pray for us.

An indulgence of 3 years. The faithful who complete a novena, reciting daily and devoutly the prayers set forth above, may gain: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (Apostolic Brief, March 22, 1918; S. P. Ap., June 15, 1935)

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” - XXIX. THE PAPAL BLESSING

695. The faithful who with sentiments of piety and devotion receive the Blessing given by the Supreme Pontiff Urbi et Orbi, even by means of radio, may gain: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. P. Ap., June 15, 1939)

This indulgence still stands, and is nearly the exact same wording as Grant 4. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly receive a blessing imparted either by the Supreme Pontiff to Rome and the World (Urbi et Orbi), or by the bishop to whose care the faithful are entrusted in accordance with Norm 7, 2° of this Manual, even if, because of reasonable circumstances, they are unable to be present physically at the sacred rite, provided that they follow it devoutly as it is broadcast live by television or radio.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” - IV. “PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY PRIESTS” – (B) To fulfil worthily the Sacred Offices committed to them

752. Another Prayer after the celebration of Mass – O most illustrious Virgin and Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, who didst worthily bear in thy sacred womb the very Creator of all things, whose most holy Body and Blood I have just received, vouchsafe to make intercession to Him in my behalf, that whatsoever I have omitted or committed in this unutterable Sacrament whether through ignorance, negligence or irreverence, may be graciously pardoned by the same, Thy dear Son, in answer to thy most holy prayers, Amen. An indulgence of 3 years (Pius XI, Rescript in his own hand, Oct. 18, 1926, exhib. Nov. 6, 1926; S. P. Ap., June 15, 1937).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17. And, even though it would be fitting, it does not need to be said by certain people (like a priest) or at a certain time (like after Mass) to give it’s partial indulgence. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
