CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – I. OUR LADY OF PITY

407. An Oration -Kneeling at thy most sacred feet, I venerate thee, great Queen of Heaven, with the deepest reverence, and I confess that thou Art the Daughter of God, the Father, the Mother of the divine of Word, and the Bride of the Holy Ghost. Thou art full of grace, virtue and the heavenly gifts; thou art the most pure temple of the Holy Trinity. Thou art the treasurer and dispenser of God's mercies. Thy pure heart is full to overflowing with charity, sweetness and tenderness for us, poor sinners; wherefore we name thee our Lady of divine Pity. Hence it is with sure confidence that I present myself before thee, our most loving Mother, afflicted and straitened on every side, and I beseech thee to make me feel the love thou hast for me, by granting me ......, if it is in conformity with the will of God and profitable to my salvation. Ah, I beseech thee, turn thy pure eyes upon me and upon all who are dear to

me. Consider the cruel warfare waged by the world, the flesh and the devil against our souls, and see how many are perishing in the strife. Remember, most tender Mother, that we are thy children, purchased by the Precious Blood of thine only-begotten Son. Deign to pray for us without ceasing to the Blessed Trinity, that we may have the grace to be ever victorious over the devil, the world and all our perverse passions; that grace whereby the just may sanctify themselves ever more and more, sinners may be converted, heresies destroyed, unbelievers enlightened and the Jews brought to the light of faith. Ask this grace for us, dearest Mother, through the infinite goodness of God most high, the merits of thy most holy Son, the anxious care wherewith thou didst wait upon Him, the love with which thou didst cherish Him, the tears thou didst shed and the sorrows thou didst undergo during His Passion. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., March 26, 1860; S. P. Ap., April 8, 1931 and June 14, 1949).

An Oration is A liturgical prayer, commonly used during Mass or during other liturgical services.

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of OUR LADY OF PITY

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XIX. THE SEVEN HOLY FOUNDERS OF THE ORDER OF THE SERVANTS OF MARY, CONFESSORS

524. A Prayer – O glorious Patriarchs, the seven holy Founders of the Order of the Servants of Mary, you who by reason of your sublime holiness were worthy to be called by the Blessed Virgin to found in the Church a new religious Order dedicated to fostering and spreading devotion towards her and the honoring of her sorrows; you who were separated from the world in the solitude of Monte Senario and were given to the most severe penances, nourishing your hearts with meditation on the eternal truths and the infinite love of God towards us; you who were constrained by the bonds of charity, and with your mission of peace gave to the world a noble example of brotherly love; obtain for us a tender devotion to Jesus Crucified and to the Queen of Martyrs, an ardent longing for an interior life, for mortification and penance, and for a burning charity towards our neighbor, which may increase our zeal in every good work. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, provided that this prayer is devoutly recited every day for a month (S. C. Ind., Feb. 22, 1888; S. P. Ap., Jan. 12, 1932 and June 14, 1949).

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XIX. THE SEVEN HOLY FOUNDERS OF THE ORDER OF THE SERVANTS OF MARY, CONFESSORS

525. Prayers - I. O glorious Patriarchs, who during your life in the world, amid the lewd manners of your time, ever kept alive in your hearts the fire of divine love and in your conduct the holiness of the Christian way of life, obtain for us such grace that being inflamed with heavenly love and drawn by the fragrance of your virtue we may live always in conformity with the maxims of the Gospel and the rules of Christian living.

II. O glorious Patriarchs, who in docile obedience to Mary's invitation overcame the most formidable difficulties of family ties and turned your backs to the world and all its promises of happiness and fortune; obtain for us such grace that we may renounce the deceitful and contemptible pleasures of earth and may ever turn our thoughts and affections to the inestimable riches of heaven.

III. O glorious Patriarchs, humble dwellers in the wilderness of Monte Senario, you who in constant and fervent prayer, in continual study of the Sacred Books, in harsh and unremitting penance, led there a life more like that of angels than that of men; obtain for us, likewise, the grace to fulfill daily all the duties of the Christian life, so as to sanctify every moment of our lives on earth and to grow in merit for the life that is eternal.

IV. O tender lovers of Jesus Crucified and devoted servants of the Queen of Martyrs, who by contemplating the sufferings of our Redeemer and the sorrows of her who shared His redeeming work fed the flames of divine love within yourselves, obtain for us the grace to grow in the love and knowledge of Jesus Crucified and of Mary the Queen of Martyrs.

V. O glorious Holy Founders of the Order of the Servants of Mary, summoned by the same Queen of Heaven to establish a new religious family in the Church, obtain for us the grace to be ever docile to the divine inspirations by a prompt and willing obedience thereto, and to serve Jesus and Mary faithfully in that state of life to which it has pleased Divine Providence to call us.

VI. O zealous Apostles of the Crucified and of Our Lady of Sorrows, who at the sight of a world estranged from God and torn asunder by discord left the solitude of Monte Senario and burning with love preached the Crucified and the Queen of Martyrs, and everywhere brought the blessings of peace and tranquillity; obtain for us the grace to live always with all men in the bonds of Christian charity and to practice always and everywhere the apostolate of the love of brotherhood.

VII. Angels of purity, seraphs of love, and martyrs of penance, you glorious seven Holy Founders, who after a life spent in the exercise of the most sublime virtue were rewarded by a happy passage from this place of exile to your heavenly home and were raised by Holy Church to the highest honors of the altar, from your place in glory where you reign with Christ turn your eyes towards us; obtain for us the grace to be able after a holy life to join your blest society in the glories of paradise, there to sing with you forever hymns of love and gratitude. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when these prayers have been devoutly repeated every day for an entire month (S.C. Ind, Apr. 21, 1888, S. P. Ap., Jan. 12, 1932 and June 14, 1949).

Refer to the above (# 524) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding prayers in honor of the saints

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” - Art. III. FOR MISSIONS IN PAGEN COUNTRIES – I. Devout Exercises

609. The faithful who give assistance to the sacred Missions either by means of alms or their own personal work, or who encourage others to do the same, whenever they devoutly recite the invocation “Jesus, our way, our truth, and our life, have mercy on us,” may gain: An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. Prop of the Faith, April 26, 1857, exhib. May 9, 1857; S. P. Ap., June 2, 1933 and June 14, 1949)

So, there is no Indulgence Grant titled “FOR MISSIONS IN PAGEN COUNTRIES” or “For aiding Missions” or anything like that.

However, this Devout Exercises is an amazing example of some of the General Grants. Let me explain.

Grant 2, regarding giving would cover this part,[The faithful who give assistance to the sacred Missions either by means of alms or their own personal work”]

Grant 4, regarding witness to their faith would cover this part, [or who encourage others to do the same]

Grant 1, regarding invocations would cover this part, [whenever they devoutly recite the invocation “Jesus, our way, our truth, and our life, have mercy on us,”]

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VI. FOR A HAPPY DEATH – IV. Prayers

644. Lord Jesus Christ, who willest that no man should perish, and to whom supplication is never made without the hope of mercy, for Thou saidst with Thine own holy and blessed lips: "All things whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, shall be done unto you"; I ask of Thee, O Lord, for Thy holy Name's sake, to grant me at the hour of my death full consciousness and the power of speech, sincere contrition for my sins, true faith, firm hope and perfect charity, that I may be able to say unto Thee with a clean heart: Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit: Thou hast redeemed me, O God of truth, who art blessed for ever and ever. Amen (St. Vincent Ferrer). An indulgence of 3 years once a day (S. C. of the Holy Office, June 5, 1913; S. P. Ap., Dec. 12, 1933 and June 14, 1949).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XVI. THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

678. The faithful, as often as they devoutly sign themselves with the sign of the Cross, with the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: "In the Name of the Father," etc., are granted: An indulgence of 3 years.

Whenever they make the same holy sign with blessed water, they may gain: An indulgence of 7 years (Apostolic Brief, July 28, 1863 and March 23, 1866; S. P. Ap., Feb. 10, 1935 and June 14, 1949).

Making the sign of the cross still offers a partial indulgence under Grant 28. This is regardless of the use of holy water.

The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly sign themselves with the sign of the cross, using the customary words: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen;

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XXXVIII. MAKING AND REPAIRING THE ORNAMENTS OF CHURCHES AND LITURGICAL

710. An Invocation - Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life, have mercy on us. The faithful who devote themselves without compensation to the making and repairing of church ornaments and liturgical vestments, either privately or in institutes founded for this purpose, as often as they devoutly recite the above invocation, while engaged in this work, that they may thus sanctify their labor still more, may gain: An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., June 2, 1933 and June 14, 1949).

This invocation, because it addresses the Merciful Jesus, is covered under the Grant ‘DV’ (that is ‘Divine Mercy’). The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: a partial indulgence, granted to the faithful who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the merciful Lord Jesus a legitimately approved invocation.

However, the rest of the indulgence around the invocation (like the activities) are notwithstanding

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
