NOTE:

  • Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under Grant 15.

  • Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant ’ 1

  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

31. Lord, save us, we perish! An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this invocation is devoutly repeated every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Aug. 18, 1943)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VI. FOR A HAPPY DEATH – IV. Prayers

645. O my adorable Creator, I ask of Thee the greatest of all Thy graces, that is to say, a holy death. No matter how greatly I have hitherto abused the life Thou gavest me, grant me the grace to end it in Thy holy love.

Let me die, like the holy Patriarchs, forsaking this valley of tears without sadness, to enter into the joy of eternal rest in my own true country.

Let me die, like the glorious Saint Joseph, in the arms of Jesus and Mary, repeating in turn each of these sweet Names which I hope to bless throughout eternity.

Let me die, like the immaculate and blessed Virgin, in the purest love and desire to be reunited to the only object of my love. Let me die, like Jesus on the Cross, with the most lively sentiments of hatred for sin, of charity toward Thee, O heavenly Father, and of perfect resignation in my agony. Holy Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit. Be merciful unto me.

Jesus, who didst die for me, grant me the grace of dying in an act of perfect love for Thee.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me now and at the hour of my death.

My Guardian Angel, my holy Patron Saints, forsake me not at the hour of my death.

Saint Joseph, obtain for me the grace of dying the death of the just. Amen.

O my God, sovereign Lord of life and of death, who, by an immutable decree for the punishment of sin, hast determined that all men must die, behold me humbly kneeling before Thy dread Majesty, resigned and submissive to this law of Thy justice. With all my heart I detest my past sins, by which I have deserved death a thousand times; and for this cause I accept death in reparation for my sins and in obedience to Thy holy will. Yes, great God, send death upon me where Thou wilt, when Thou wilt, and in what manner Thou wilt. Meantime I shall avail myself of the days which it shall please Thee to bestow upon me, to detach myself from this world and to break every tie that holds me in bondage to this place of exile, and to prepare myself to appear with sure confidence before Thy judgment seat. Wherefore I surrender myself without reserve into the hands of Thy fatherly Providence. May Thy divine will be done now and for evermore! Amen. An indulgence of 500 days once a day (S. P. Ap., Jan. 15, 1920 and Aug. 18, 1936).

This prayer seems to be a prayer that covers several categories. By addressing Mary, it could be included in Grant 17. By being duly approved and addressing St. Joesph, One’s Guardian Angel, and holy Patron Saints it could be included in Grants 18, 19, and/or 21.

And, if it can not be included in any of these categories, it would be included under Grant 15 for mental prayer. All of these indulgences offer a partial indulgence so it likely doesn't make a difference as to which category/ occasion you would use this prayer in.

Just for fun, since we don’t often review Grants 18 and 19, the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' for Grants 18, and 19 are as follows:

G18) A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly invoke the care of their guardian Angel with a duly approved prayer.

G19) A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who invoke St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a duly approved prayer

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. IV. For the Conversion of Non-Catholics – III. Prayers

632. For the Conversion of Russia - Prayer to Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus – O loving and compassionate Saint, deign to comfort our Russian brethren, the victims of a long and cruel persecution of the Christian name; obtain for them perseverance in the faith, progress in the love of God and of their neighbor, and in confidence toward the most holy Mother of God; prepare for them holy priests who shall make reparation for the blasphemies and sacrileges committed against the holy Eucharist; grant that angelic purity, especially in the young, and every Christian virtue may once more flourish amongst them, to the end that this noble people, being delivered from all slavery and returning freely to the one fold entrusted by the loving Heart of the Risen Christ to Saint Peter and his successors, may at length taste the joy of glorifying the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit in the fellowship of the holy Catholic Church. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said devoutly every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Aug. 19, 1929)

Because this prayer addresses Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, I would categorize it under Grant 21. Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

P.S. Because to this prayer mentions the desire of unity, this prayer COULD be considered useful under Grant 11…Maybe… The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite an appropriately approved prayer for the unity of Christians

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
