August 21-22 - Traditional Indulgence of the day!

We are evaluating old indulgences that have been approve on todays date of:

August

21 & 22

List of Traditional materials we will be looking at today, and the current/withstanding grants that they satisfy (directly or indirectly).

  • 519. – A Devout Exercise – Thomas Aquinas/Six Sundays

    • potential partial indulgence… General Grant 2, 3, or 4

  • 663. A Prayer to Jesus Christ - O Jesus, who in the very first day

    • partial indulgence… Grant 5

  • 664. Prayers - Saint Raphael the Archangel,

    • partial indulgence… Grant 5 or Grant 21

NOTE:

  • Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under Grant 15.

  • Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant ’ 1

  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XVI. SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS, CONFESSOR

519. – A Devout Exercise - The faithful who spend some time on Sunday in devout meditations and prayers, or other works of piety in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas, with the intention of continuing the same for six successive Sundays, may gain: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. C. Ind., Aug. 21, 1886)

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – V. For Emigrants

663. A Prayer to Jesus Christ - O Jesus, who in the very first day of Thine earthly life wast compelled, together with Mary, Thy loving Mother, and Saint Joseph, to leave Thy native land and to endure in Egypt the misery and discomforts of poor emigrants, turn Thine eyes upon our brethren, who, far away from their dear country and from all that is dear to them, are not infrequently constrained to struggle with the difficulties of a new life, and who are likewise often exposed to grave dangers and snares for their immortal souls.

Be Thou their guide in their uncertain journey, their help in trouble, their comfort in sorrow; keep them safe in their faith, holy in their lives, and faithful to their children, their wives, and their parents; grant, O Lord, that we may be able to embrace them affectionately once more in their native land, and hereafter to live inseparably united to them at the foot of Thy throne in our heavenly country. Amen. An indulgence of 350 days (Pius XI, Audience Oct. 26, 1928; exhib. Nov. 19, 1928; S. P. Ap., Aug. 22, 1936).

Under Grant 5, a partial indulgence is available for those who pray for the intentions of ‘DAYS DESIGNATED UNIVERSALLY FOR A CERTAIN RELIGIOUS INTENTION.’ On the Last Sunday of September is World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Prayers for universal intentions do not need to be approved, nor (as far as I know) do they have to be said only on that universally designated day. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, on days universally designated to foster certain religious intentions (e.g., the promotion of priestly and religious vocations, the pastoral care of the sick and infirm, strengthening the profession of faith in young people, and assisting others to lead a holy life, etc.), piously assist at celebrations of this kind; however, those who pray for these same intentions may gain a partial indulgence.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – V. For Emigrants

664. Prayers - I. Saint Raphael the Archangel, thou wast a faithful companion to the young man, Tobias, on his long journey from Syria to Media, rescuing him from many dangers and, in particular, from the danger of death in the river Tigris; we beseech thee with all our hearts to be a safe guide and an Angel of consolation to our dear ones on the long journey which they must undertake in order to remove to foreign lands; do thou keep them far from all dangers of body and soul, and grant that they may come in safety to the haven of their desire.

Glory be to the Father, etc.

II. Saint Raphael the Archangel, arriving in Media thou didst bestow upon the young man, Tobias, extraordinary favors, going thyself to the city of Rages to receive the money from Gabelus, and causing him to find a worthy spouse in Sara, when she was delivered from the slavery of the demon, and enriching him with the goods of fortune; look, we humbly beseech thee, upon our dear ones who find themselves in foreign lands; do thou in like manner extend unto them thy heavenly protection, prospering their labors to the benefit of our beloved families and saving them from the many snares which will be laid for their souls, so that they may be enabled to preserve the precious gift of faith and to conform their lives to its teaching

Glory be to the Father, etc

III. Saint Raphael the Archangel, who faithful to thy mission didst bring back safe and sound to Syria the young man, Tobias, enriching his house with blessings and graces, and even restoring the gift of sight to his blind father; ah, fulfill thy task in behalf of our dear emigrants. Bring them back in thine own good time, safe and sound, to our dear families, and grant that their return may be a source of consolation, prosperity and every choice blessing; and we too, like the family of Tobias, will thank thee for all thy tender care and will unite ourselves to thee in praising, blessing and thanking the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen

Glory be to the Father, etc

V. Pray for us, Saint Raphael the Archangel,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

O God, who didst give Thy blessed Archangel Raphael unto Thy servant Tobias to be his fellow-traveler; grant unto us, Thy servants, that the same may ever keep us and shield us, help us and defend us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days once a day (S. C. of the Holy Office, Feb. 17, 1910; S. P. Ap., Aug. 22, 1936).

Being a prayer for the same theme as above (For Emigrants) please refer to the above (# 663) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding ‘DAYS DESIGNATED UNIVERSALLY FOR A CERTAIN RELIGIOUS INTENTION.’

Also! Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. By addressing the Archangel Raphael, this prayer should also apply under this Grant. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
