CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LIII. SAINT CATHERINE, VIRGIN AND MARTYR

569. Prayers to be said by those engaged in teaching are found under nn. 761 and 762. ***An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. Ind., April 29, 1907; S. P, Ap., Aug. 10, 1933)

The prayer can be found below. The only reason this # 569 was made was so as to not neglect this prayer in the ‘Saints’ section.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XVIII. To obtain God’s help before any action

681. A Devout Practice - The faithful who on the first day of the year join in the devout chanting of the hymn “Veni Creator" in a church, public or semi-public oratory, (in the case of those who may lawfully use the latter), in order to pray for God’s help throughout the course of the year, are granted: An indulgence of 10 years; A plenary indulgence if they go to confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of His Holiness the Pope (S. P. Ap., Aug. 10, 1936).

This traditional indulgence is nearly the exact same to a portion of the current indulgence under Grant 26. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly assist either at the recitation or solemn singing of the Veni Creator, either on the first day of the year to implore divine assistance for the course of the whole year, or on the solemnity of Pentecost;

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XIX. Prayer of Thanksgiving

684. The Ambrosian Hymn – a) The faithful who, to give thanks to God for blessings received, devoutly recite the Ambrosian hymn Te Deum laudamus are granted: An indulgence of 5 years. b) Those who on the last day of the year assist at the singing of this hymn in a church, public or semi-public oratory (in the case of those who lawfully use the same), in order to give thanks to God for the blessings received from Him during the whole year, are granted: An indulgence of 10 years; A plenary indulgence with the addition of confession and Holy Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father (S. P. Ap., Aug. 10, 1936).

Similar to the above indulgence (# 681)

This traditional indulgence is nearly the exact same to a portion of the current indulgence under Grant 26. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly assist either at the recitation or solemn singing of the Te Deum, on the final day of the year, to offer thanks to God for gifts received throughout the course of the entire year.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” – VI Prayers to be said by teachers

761. A Prayer - O glorious Virgin and Martyr, Saint Catherine, who, by thy wonderful knowledge, thy zeal for the faith and thy glorious martyrdom, hast gained for Jesus Christ so great a harvest of souls, we choose thee, whose patronage hath been so often implored by the most learned men, as the protector and patroness of our studies and our teaching. Obtain for us, who are thy clients, a wholehearted love for Jesus Christ our Saviour, a burning zeal to make Him known and loved, an unwavering attachment to the Catholic faith and to the teachings of Holy Church. May our Lord, through thine intercession, be pleased to bestow upon all who teach others the fulness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit; may they join to true knowledge sure and effectual methods, purity of faith, integrity of life and a humble distrust of themselves. Ask Jesus, thy Spouse, to have pity on all those who are being taught; may He preserve them from irreligious or indifferent masters, from perverse or erroneous doctrines; may He give them a right spirit, a docile heart and the grace to make progress in their studies according to the designs of His supreme wisdom. Finally, glorious Saint, implore from the Father of lights such an outpouring of grace upon the instruction of youth, that after they have studied, loved and practiced Thy divine law, they may all of them, both masters and pupils, come at last to the holy mount, which is Jesus Christ. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. Ind., April 29, 1907; S. P. Ap., Aug. 10, 1933)

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
