Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – VI. OUR LADY OF GOOD HOPE
416. A Prayer - O Mary immaculate, the precious name of Mother of Good Hope, with which we honor thee, fills our hearts to overflowing with the sweetest consolation and moves us to hope for every blessing from thee. If such a title has been given to thee, it is a sure sign that no one has recourse to thee in vain. Accept, therefore, with a mother's love our devout homage, as we earnestly beseech thee to be gracious unto us in our every need. Above all do we pray thee to make us live in constant union with thee and thy divine Son Jesus. With thee as our guide, we are certain that we shall ever walk in the right way; in such wise that it will be our happy lot to hear thee say on the last day of our life those words of comfort: "Come then, my good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." Amen.
An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., Jan. 26, 1901; S. P. Ap., Aug. 8, 1936)
Note: The same indulgences are gained by those who, having been called to the religious life, insert the following words after: “thy divine Son Jesus”:
"He has graciously chosen us to labor in His mystic vineyard. Ah, do thou who art ever watchful that its fruits may be plentiful, extend thy loving care to us, miserable sinners, that we may be enabled to succeed abundantly in our high undertaking. With thee as our guide," as above.
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of OUR LADY OF GOOD HOPE
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. III. “IN HONOR OF THE HOLY APOSTLES” – III. Saint Paul the Apostle
486. Prayers - O glorious Saint Paul, who, from being a persecutor of the Christian name, didst become its most zealous Apostle, and who, to carry the knowledge of Jesus, our divine Saviour, to the uttermost parts of the earth, didst joyfully suffer prison, scourgings, stonings, shipwreck and all manner of persecutions, and who didst finish thy course by shedding the last drop of thy blood: obtain for us the grace to accept, as favors bestowed by the mercy of God, the infirmities, sufferings and misfortunes of this life, that we may not grow slack in our service, of God by reason of these vicissitudes of our exile, but that we may rather show ourselves ever more devoted. Amen.
V. Pray for us, Saint Paul the Apostle,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
O God, who hast taught the multitude of the Gentiles by the preaching of blessed Paul the Apostle: grant unto us, we beseech Thee, that we who keep his memory sacred, may feel the might of his intercession before Thee. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions if these prayers are recited daily for a month (S. C. of the Prop. of the Faith, Jan. 13, 1905, document exhibited, Jan. 18, 1905; S. P. Ap., Aug. 8, 1936),
NOTE: Another prayer to St. Paul the Apostle for the publishing of good books, is found under n. 709.
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
