CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

3. With all our heart and voice, we acknowledge, we praise and we bless Thee, God the Father unbegotten, Thee, the only-begotten Son, Thee, the Holy Ghost the Paraclete, O holy and undivided Trinity (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this prayer is devoutly repeated every day for a month (S. C. Ind., July 2, 1816; S. P. Ap., Sept. 28, 1936)

This traditional indulgence is listed under ‘Ejaculations and Invocations’ however it is said to be a prayer in it’s credentials. Both Grants that if could be under offer partial indulgences only, but I will be treating it as a prayer, so it would be classified under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IV. - “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” – XI. Prayers

180. O sacred banquet, in which Christ is received, the memory of His Passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.

V. Thou didst give them bread from heaven:

R. Containing in itself all sweetness.

Let us pray.

O God, who under a wonderful Sacrament hast left us a memorial of Thy Passion; grant us, we beseech Thee, so to reverence the sacred mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, that we may ever feel within ourselves the fruit of Thy Redemption: Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.

In Paschaltide the following prayer is said:

Let us pray.

Pour upon us, O Lord, the Spirit of Thy love, to make us of one heart, whom, by Thy tender mercy, Thou hast filled with the paschal sacrament. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the same Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

An indulgence of 7 years. An indulgence of 10 years, if these prayers are recited before the Blessed Sacrament. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily recitation of the above antiphon together with the versicle and prayer (S. P. Ap., June 4, 1934, July 12, 1941 and Sept. 29, 1949).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 7, because it is a “duly approved” prayer to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. In fact, in the Manuel of Indulgences, only the first paragraph/sentence (the antiphon) is required for the indulgence. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who offer any duly approved prayer to Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. IV. “THE MOST PURE HEART OF MARY” – I. Invocations

386. Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, if repeated daily (S. C. Ind., Sept. 30, 1852).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.” - VI. Prayers

471. I. In the miseries of this vale of tears, to whom shall we have recourse, if not to thee, to whom thy beloved Spouse Mary entrusted all her rich treasures, that thou mightest keep them to our advantage? "Go to my Spouse, Joseph," Mary seems to say to us, "and he will comfort you, he will deliver you from the misfortunes which now oppress you and will make you happy and contented." Do thou have pity on us, therefore, O Joseph, have pity on us through that love which thou didst cherish toward a Spouse so worthy and so amiable.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

II. We are fully conscious that we have offended the justice of God by our sins and deserve His most severe chastisements. Now, what shall be our place of refuge? In what haven shall we find ourselves in safety? "Go to to Joseph," Jesus seems to say to us, "Go to to Joseph, in whom I was well pleased and whom I had for my foster-father. To him, as to a father, I have communicated all power, that he may use it for your good according to his own desire.” Pity us, therefore, O blessed Joseph, pity us, for the great love thou didst bear toward a Son so admirable and so dear.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

III. Unhappily, the sins we have committed call down upon us the heaviest scourges; this we must confess. In what ark shall we; take refuge in order to be saved? Where shall we find the blessed rainbow that shall give us comfort and hope in the midst of our affliction? “Go to Joseph,” the eternal Father seems to say to us, “go to him, who took My place on earth with regard to My Son made Man. entrusted to his keeping My Son who is the unfailing source of grace: every grace, therefore, is in his hands." Pity us, then, dear Joseph, pity us by thy great love for Almighty God who hath been so generous to thee.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when these prayers are devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Sept. 30, 1936).

Although there is a current indulgence Grant for prayers to St. Joesph, it is not ‘duly approve.’ But it can still be used on St. Joesph’s feast day, under grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LVII. SAINT THERESA OF THE CHILD JESUS, VIRGIN

576. Prayer - O marvelous Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, who, in thy brief mortal career, didst become a mirror of angelic purity, of daring love and of whole-hearted surrender to Almighty God, now that thou art enjoying the recompense of thy virtues, turn thine eyes of mercy upon us who trust in thee. Obtain for us the grace to keep our hearts and minds pure and clean like unto thine, and to abhor in all sincerity whatever might tarnish ever so slightly the luster of a virtue so sublime, a virtue that endears us to thy heavenly Bridegroom. Ah, dear Saint, grant us to feel in every need the power of thy intercession; give us comfort in all the bitterness of this life and especially at its latter end, that we may be worthy to share eternal happiness with thee in paradise. Amen.

V. Pray for us, O blessed Theresa,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

O Lord, who hast said: "Unless you become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven"; grant us, we beseech Thee, so to walk in the footsteps of thy blessed Virgin Theresa with a humble and single heart, that we may attain to ever lasting rewards: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days, once a day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if these prayers are said daily with devotion for an entire month (S. P. Ap., July 2, 1925 and Sept. 30, 1935).

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
