We are evaluating old indulgences that have been approve on todays date of:

October

2 & 3

List of Traditional materials we will be looking at today, and the current/withstanding grants that they satisfy (directly or indirectly).

  • 775. Visiting the “Seven Alters”

    • plenary/partial indulgence… General Grant 3

  • 747. Preparation for Mass

    • partial indulgence… Grant 15

  • 750. Thanksgiving after Mass

    • partial indulgence… Grant 15

NOTE:

  • Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under Grant 15.

  • Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant ’ 1

  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

APPENDIX. “Indulgences attached to visiting certain holy places in Rome” – III. THE VISIT TO THE SO-CALLED "SEVEN ALTARS" IN THE VATICAN BASILICA

775. The faithful who visit the following Seven Altars in the Vatican Basilica: 1° the Gregorian alter of the Blessed Virgin; 2° that of Sts. Processus and Martinian; 3° that of St. Michael the Archangel; 4° that of St. Petronilla, Virgin; 5° that of Our Lady of the Pillar; 6° that of the holy Apostles Simon and Jude; 7° that of St. Gregory the Great, may gain: An indulgence of 7 years for the visit to each of the seven altars, if they recite any prayer they may choose in honor of the Titular Saint of the alter; A plenary indulgence on the Feast Day of the Titular Saint of a given alter, if they visit that alter as above, and confess their sins, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff; A plenary indulgence, if they visit the seven altars in the aforesaid manner on the same day, according to the rule laid down in canon 923 of the Code of Canon Law, with the addition of confession, Communion and prayers for the intentions of the Pope (S. P. Ap., Oct. 2, 1935)

Most of this traditional indulgence is Notwithstanding. It does mention “A plenary indulgence on the Feast Day of the Titular Saint of a given alter…”. Which perked my interest for Grant 33 regarding Visits to Sacred Places, but I don’t know if honoring the Titulars (patron saints or mysteries) of an alters applies under this grand. So, instead, I would recommend turning to the General grants. As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
