  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

11. Teach me, O Lord, to do Thy will, for Thou art my God (Psalm 142, 10). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when the daily recitation of this invocation is continued for a month (S. P. Ap., Jan. 20, 1921 and Oct. 4, 1933)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1

The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

Because this is also taken from Scripture, it would be applicable under Grant 30.

The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who read the Sacred Scriptures as spiritual reading, from a text approved by competent authority and with the reverence due to the divine word, for at least a half an hour; if the time is less, the indulgence will be partial. (indulgences are granted, as mentioned above, for those who *listen under certain circumstance)

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

24. O Lord, remember not our former iniquities, and be merciful to our sins for Thy Name's sake (Psalm 78, 8-9). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this invocation is said daily for a month with devotion (S. P. Ap., Oct. 4, 1936).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. This invocation also may apply under ‘Grant 30’ regarding Scripture Reading. Refer to the above (# 11) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations/scripture reading.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IV. - “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” – X. Acts of Adoration, Reparation, and Thanksgiving

179. An Act of Reparation - With that profound humility which the Faith itself inspires in me, O my God and Saviour Jesus Christ, true God and true men I love Thee with all my heart, and I adore Thee who art hidden here, in reparation for all the irreverences, profanations and sacrileges which Thou receivest in the most adorable Sacrament of the Altar.

I adore Thee, O my God, if not so much as Thou art worthy to be adored nor so much as I am bound to do, yet as much as I am able; would that I could adore Thee with that perfect worship which the Angels in heaven are enabled to offer Thee. Mayest Thou, O my Jesus, be known, adored, loved and thanked by all men at every moment in this most holy and divine Sacrament. Amen.

An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily repetition of this prayer (S. C. Ind., Jan. 21, 1815; S. P. Ap., Oct. 4, 1935).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – III. Litany

319. THE LITANY OF LORETO … (Due to the length of litanies, this litany will have an external link, found below)...An indulgence of 7 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily devout recitation of this Litany with its versicle and prayer (S. C. Ind., Sept. 30, 1817; S. P. Ap., March 28, 1933). NOTE: The versicle and prayer can be changed for the various seasons without prejudice to the indulgences (S. P. Ap., Oct. 4, 1949).

This litany can be found printed, not only in the traditional book: the ‘Raccolta’, but also in the current book: ‘Manuel of Indulgences’ (find "NOVENAS, LITANIES, AND THE LITTLE OFFICES" in the table of contents). If you do follow this link, you will see that this litany is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 22. This grant states that litanies must be “approved”, and this one is.

The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite approved litanies (e.g., of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and of the Saints);

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” - XIII. Our Lady of Perpetual Help

426. An Invocation - Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for us. An indulgence of 300 days (Holy Office Jan. 29, 1914; S. P. Ap., Oct. 4, 1933).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
