CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” - IV. “PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY PRIESTS” – (A) To obtain Holiness of life.

744. A Form of Consecrating Priests to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus – Lord Jesus, who art our most loving Redeemer and a Priest for ever, look mercifully on us, Thy humble suppliants, whom Thou hast been pleased to call Thy friends and partakers of Thy priesthood. We are Thine; we wish to be Thine forever: therefore to Thy Most Sacred Heart which Thou hast shown to oppressed humanity as their only safe refuge, we dedicate and devote ourselves wholly this day. Thou who hast promised plenteous fruit in the divine ministry to those priests who are devoted to Thy Sacred Heart, make us, we beseech Thee, fit workmen in Thy vineyard, truly meek and humble, filled with the spirit of devotion and patience, so fired with love of Thee that we shall never cease to enkindle and quicken the same fire of love in the hearts of the faithful. Renew our hearts, therefore, in the fire of Thy Heart, so that henceforth we shall desire nothing save to promote Thy glory and win for Thee the souls whom Thou didst redeem by Thy Precious Blood. Show Thy mercy, good Shepherd, chiefly to those priests, our brethren, if there be any such, who, walking in the vanity of sense, have saddened Thee and Thy beloved Spouse, Holy Church, by their lamentable falling away from Thee. Grant us grace to bring them back to Thine embrace, or, at least, to atone for their crimes, to repair the harm they have done, and to lessen the sorrow they have caused Thee, by the consolation of our love. Allow each one of us, finally, to pray to Thee in the words of Saint Augustine: "O sweet Jesus, live Thou in me, and let the living coal of Thy love burn brightly in my spirit, and grow into a perfect conflagration; let it burn perpetually on the altar of my heart, let it glow in my marrow, let it blaze up in the most secret places of my soul; in the day of my consummation let me be found totally consumed thereby in Thy presence, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest one God for ever and ever. Amen. An indulgence of 3 years. An indulgence of 7 years on the day of the monthly retreat. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions at the end of a course of "Spiritual Exercises" (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, Aug. 17, 1908, exhib. Nov. 14, 1908; S. P. Ap., Oct. 24, 1935).

Even though there is a current Grant for consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it is only offered for the consecration of a whole family, not individuals.

So, this prayer is eligible for a partial indulgence only under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LVII. SAINT THERESA OF THE CHILD JESUS, VIRGIN

577. A Prayer - O God, who didst inflame with Thy spirit of love the soul of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, grant that we too may love Thee and make Thee loved exceedingly. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days, once a day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, provided that the daily recitation of this prayer be continued for a month (S. P. Ap., April 20, 1932 and Oct. 25, 1936). Note: Prayers to St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in behalf of Missions among the heathen are found under nn. 619 and 620; for the conversion of Russia, under n. 632.

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER VIII. ‘FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED’ – VI. Prayers

599. O God, who in the ranks of the Apostolic Priesthood hast caused Thy servants to be invested with the pontifical or priestly dignity; grant, we beseech Thee, that they also may be joined unto the everlasting fellowship of the same Thy priests. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said daily (S. P. Ap., Oct. 25, 1936).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.

310. Thou art my Mother, O Virgin Mary: keep me safe lest I ever offend thy dear Son, and obtain for me the grace to please Him always and in all things. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Oct. 26, 1935).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER VI. “THE HOLY ANGELS” – Art. V. The Guardian Angel

452. Invocation - Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom His love commits me here; Ever this day (or night) be at my side, To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days.

A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, for the daily recitation of this invocation.

A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions on the Feast of the holy Guardian Angels, if this invocation has been said frequently in the morning and evening throughout the preceding year.

A plenary indulgence at the hour of death, to be gained by the faithful who have been accustomed to say this invocation frequently during life, provided that they go to confession and Communion, or, at least, make an act of contrition, invoke the holy Name of Jesus, orally, if possible, or at least mentally, and accept death with resignation from the hand of God as the just punishment for their sins (Apostolic Brief, Oct. 2, 1795; S. C. Ind., June 11, 1796 and May 15, 1821; S. P. Ap., Oct. 27, 1935).

This prayer (even though it is labeled as an invocation here) is specifically mentioned in the ‘Manuel of Indulgences’ under Grant 18. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly invoke the care of their guardian Angel with a duly approved prayer (e.g. Angele Dei).

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
