Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations
12. a) O Most Hold Trinity, I adore Thee who art dwelling by Thy grace within my soul.
b) O Most Holy Trinity, who art dwelling by Thy grace within my soul, make me love Thee more and more.
c) O Most Holy Trinity, who art dwelling by Thy grace within my soul, sanctify me more and more.
d) Abide with me, O Lord, be Thou my true joy.
An indulgence of 300 days for each of the above prayers even when recited separately (S. P. Ap., April 26, 1921 and Oct. 23, 1928)
These ejaculations, whether they are more like prayers or more like invocations, offer a partial indulgence. I will liken them more to prayers, so the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LI. SAINT BRIDGET, QUEEN OF SWEDEN, WIDOW
566. A Prayer for the conversion of non-Catholics is found under n. 629. *** (S. C. Ind., July 5, 1905; S. P. Ap., Oct. 23, 1928).
This prayer would be good for current Grant 11 for Christian unity. However, this particular number (# 566) is under the saint section, in which this prayer is also good for, according to Grant 21. That is, approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
Note: The prayer, under # 629, is down below on this same date.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” - Art. III. FOR MISSIONS IN PAGAN COUNTRIES – II. Prayers
612. O God, the everlasting Creator of all things, remember that the souls of unbelievers were made by Thee and formed in Thine own image and likeness. Remember that Jesus, Thy Son, endured a most bitter death for their salvation. Permit not, I beseech Thee, O Lord, that Thy Son should be any longer despised by unbelievers, but do Thou graciously accept the prayers of holy men and of the Church, the Spouse of Thy most holy Son, and be mindful of Thy mercy. Forget their idolatry and unbelief, and grant that they too may some day know Him whom Thou hast sent, even the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our Salvation, our Life and Resurrection, by whom we have been saved and delivered, to whom we have been saved and delivered, to whom be glory for endless ages. Amen (St. Francis Xavier). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if the prayer is devoutly recited daily for a month (Pius IX, Rescript in his own hand, May 24, 1847, exhib. Sept. 30, 1862; S. P. Ap., Dec. 6, 1918 and Oct. 23, 1935).
Due to this prayer mentioning the desire of unity, this prayer is covered under Grant 11. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite an appropriately approved prayer for the unity of Christians
Note: If this prayer doesn’t fit under Grant 11 (if it is not for Christians in particular), it would still offer a partial indulgence under Grant 15 for mental prayer.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. IV. For the Conversion of Non-Catholics – III. Prayers
629. To Saint Bridget, Queen of Sweden, Widow – With trusting hearts we turn to thee, blessed Bridget, in these hostile and unbelieving days, to implore thine intercession in behalf of those who are separated from the Church of Jesus Christ. By that clear knowledge thou didst have of the bitter sufferings of our crucified Redeemer, the price of our salvation, we offer thee our supplications to obtain the grace of faith for those who are outside the one true fold, that so the sheep who are scattered may return to the one true Shepherd, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Saint Bridget, fearless in thy service of God, pray for us. Saint Bridget, patient in the midst of suffering and humiliation, pray for us. Saint Bridget, wonderful in thy love for Jesus and Mary, pray for us. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
An indulgence of 300 days once a day (S. C. Ind., July 5, 1905; S. P. Ap., Oct. 23, 1928).
See the above, # 566, for this prayer under the category of ‘prayers in honor of saints.’ Due to this prayer mentioning the desire of unity, this prayer is covered under Grant 11. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite an appropriately approved prayer for the unity of Christians. Note: If this prayer doesn’t fit under Grant 11 (if it is not for Christians in particular), it would still offer a partial indulgence under Grant 15 for mental prayer.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
