CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations
2. Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts: the heavens and the earth are full of Thy glory (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this ejaculation is devoutly recited every day for a month (S. C. Ind., June 6, 1769 and June 26, 1770; S. P. Ap., March 23, 1936 and May 25, 1949).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER IV. “GOD THE HOLY GHOST” – VIII. Prayers
289. O Holy Spirit, divine Spirit of light and love, I consecrate to Thee my understanding, my heart and my will, my whole being for time and for eternity. May my understanding be always submissive to Thy heavenly inspirations and to the teachings of the holy Catholic Church, of which Thou art the infallible Guide; may my heart be ever inflamed with love of God and of my neighbor; may my will be ever conformed to the divine will, and may my whole life be a faithful imitation of the life and virtues of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to whom with the Father and Thee be honor and glory for ever. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, June 1, 1908, exhib. June 5, 1908; S. P. Ap., May 25, 1936).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers
351. O Mother of tender mercy, most Blessed Virgin Mary, I am a wretched and unworthy sinner, yet I fly to thee with all my heart and all my affection; I implore thy loving-kindness, that even as thou didst stand beside thy dear Son as He hung upon the Cross, so thou wilt mercifully deign to stand beside me, a miserable sinner, and beside all thy faithful people as we receive the most sacred Body of thy Son, to the end that we may be enabled to receive It worthily and fruitfully. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. The faithful who recite this prayer before Holy Communion are granted: An indulgence of 3 years; A plenary indulgence, if they say it daily for a month, and in addition go to confession, visit some church or public oratory, and pray for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff (S. P. Ap., May 25, 1941)
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XLIII. SAINT TARCISIUS, MARTYR
557. Prayer – O unvanquished martyr of the faith, Saint Tarcisius, who wast inflamed with the most intense affection for the Holy Eucharist and didst enjoy the happiness of dying united to Jesus in the Eucharistic species, we beseech thee to obtain for us from Our Lord that our hearts also may be filled with a like love in receiving Him frequently into our breast and above all in the final moments of our lives, and so united with Him we may enter into a blessed eternity. Amen
V. Pray for us, O blessed Tarcisius.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
Grant, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, that even as we praise Thy mighty works in the passion of Saint Tarcisius, so we may obtain Thy forgiveness through his loving entreaties. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., May 26, 1941).
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XXVII. CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE
693. The faithful who devote a half hour but not less than twenty minutes to teaching or studying Christian doctrine, may gain: An indulgence of 3 years; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions twice a month, if the above practice is done at least twice a month (Apostolic Brief, March 12, 1930; S. P. Ap., May 26, 1949).
Except for the time limits, this indulgence still stands according to Grant 6. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who teach or study Christian doctrine.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
