Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations
9. My God, I give Thee thanks for what Thou givest, and for what Thou takest away; Thy will be done. An indulgence of 300 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, May 29, 1906, exhib. June 28, 1922; S. P. Ap., May 22, 1934)
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXV. SAINT PETER FOURIER, CONFESSOR
535. A Prayer - Most glorious Saint Peter Fourier, lily of purity, pattern of Christian perfection, perfect model of priestly zeal, by that glory which has been granted thee in heaven, turn one kind glance upon us and come to our assistance before the throne of the Most High. During thy earthly life, guided by thy favorite maxim: "to harm no one, to give help to all,” thou didst spend thine entire life in giving aid to the wretched, counsel to the doubtful, and consolation to the afflicted; thou didst draw back to the paths of virtue those who had gone astray. Now that thou art so powerful in heaven, continue thy task of giving help to all and be our watchful defender, so that, through thine intercession, we, being delivered from all temporal misfortunes and confirmed in our faith and in our love, may be victors over the wiles of the enemies of our salvation, and may be enabled one day with thee to praise and bless our Lord through all eternity. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said daily with devotion (S. C. Ind., May 27, 1897; S. P. Ap., June 26, 1934 and May 22, 1949).
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. IV. For the Conversion of Non-Catholics – III. Prayers
630. To obtain the reunion of the Christians of the East – O Lord, who hast united the various nations in the confession of Thy name, we pray Thee for the Christian peoples of the East. Mindful of the high place they held of old in Thy Church, we beg of Thee to inspire them with an ardent desire to regain that place, in order to form, with us, one only fold under the guidance of one and the same Shepherd. Grant that their hearts may be docile to hear the voice of their holy Doctors, who are likewise our Fathers in the faith. Let a spirit of concord and charity, which is a sign of Thy presence among the faithful, hasten the day when our prayers shall be united to theirs, so that every nation and every tongue may acknowledge and glorify our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, for the daily recitation of this prayer (Apostolic Brief, April 15, 1916; S. P. Ap., May 22, 1937)
Due to this prayer mentioning the desire of unity, this prayer is covered under Grant 11. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite an appropriately approved prayer for the unity of Christians
CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.” - V. Devout Exercises
465. The faithful on any of seven continuous Sundays of the year that they may choose, if they devoutly recite the prayers set forth under n. 470 below, or, in case of some impediment thereto, say Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be seven times, may gain: An indulgence of 5 years; A plenary indulgence, on the usual conditions (S. C. Ind., Feb, 1, and March 22, 1847; S.P. Ap., May 23, 1936)
The prayers of n. 470 are 7 parts dedicated to St. Joesph. This would not count as a novena, nor would any current practice require a weeks worth of prayers to gain an indulgence (at least not in this context), but because it addressed St. Joseph this traditional indulgence should be covered under Grant 19. This grant says that a prayer must be ‘duly approved,’ which it is. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who invoke St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a duly approved prayer.
CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.” - VII. Prayers
477. O Joseph, virgin-father of Jesus, most pure Spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray every day for us to the same Jesus, the Son of God, that we, being defended by the power of His grace and striving dutifully in life, may be crowned by Him at the hour of death. An indulgence of 500 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, Oct. 11, 1906; exhib. Nov. 26, 1906; S. P. Ap., May 23, 1931).
A partial indulgence is available through Grant 19, prayers in honor of St. Joseph.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
