CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. II. ‘IN HONOR OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS’ – IV. Devout Practices

120. The faithful who, after confession and Communion visit some church or oratory, public or even semi-public (in the case of those who may lawfully use the latter), on the Feast of the most holy Name of Jesus and pray for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff may gain: A plenary indulgence (Pius X, Audience Nov. 19, 1906, exhib. Nov. 26, 1906; S. P. Ap., May 17, 1927).

This indulgence, as a whole (outside of some General Grants, like GG3 or GG4), is Notwithstanding.

However, under Grant 33, visiting church or oratory who’s titular is The Most Holy Name of Jesus, on this feast day, may provide a plenary indulgence. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: "A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit, and there devoutly recite an Our Father and the Creed [at] a minor basilica, a cathedral church, a parish church, an international, national, or diocesan shrine established by competent authority , on the solemnity of its Titular"

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. III. “THE INFANT JESUS” – III. First Communion

151. The faithful who receive Holy Communion for the first time or who are present at the first Communion of others, are granted: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. C. Ind., July 12, 1905; S. P. Ap., May 17, 1927).

This indulgence remains in effect, nearlyword for word, in current Grant 8. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who receive Holy Communion for the first time or devoutly assist at the first Holy Communion of others.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. III. “THE INFANT JESUS” - A PRAYER TO FOSTER THE PRACTICE OF DAILY COMMUNION

163. O sweetest Jesu, Thou who camest into the world to give all souls the life of Thy grace, and who, to preserve and nourish it in them, hast willed to be at once the daily cure of their daily infirmities and their daily sustenance; we humbly beseech Thee, by Thy Heart all on fire with love for us, to pour forth upon them all Thy divine Spirit, so that those who are unhappily in mortal sin, may turn to Thee and regain the life of grace which they have lost, and those who, through Thy gift, are already living this divine life, may draw near daily, when they can, to Thy sacred table, whence, by means of daily Communion, they may receive daily the antidote of their daily venial sins, and may every day foster within themselves the life of grace; and being thus ever more and more purified, may come at last to the possession of that eternal life which is happiness with Thee. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days once a day. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, when this prayer is said every day (Pius X, Audience of May 30, 1905, exhibited June 3, 1905; S. P. Ap., May 17, 1935).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXXVII. SAINT NICHOLAS, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR

551. A Prayer of Impetration - Glorious Saint Nicholas, my special patron, from thy throne in glory where thou dost enjoy the presence of God, turn thine eyes in pity upon me and obtain for me from our Lord the graces and helps that I need in my spiritual and temporal necessities (and especially this favor ......, provided that it be profitable to my salvation). Be mindful, likewise, O glorious and saintly Bishop, of our Sovereign Pontiff, of Holy Church, and of all Christian people. Bring back to the right way of salvation all those who are living steeped in sin and blinded by the darkness of ignorance, error and heresy. Comfort the afflicted, provide for the needy, strengthen the fearful, defend the oppressed, give health to the infirm; cause all men to experience the effects of thy powerful intercession with the supreme Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

V. Pray for us, O blessed Nicholas,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

O God, who hast glorified blessed Nicholas, Thine illustrious Confessor and Bishop, by means of countless signs and wonders, and who dost not cease daily so to glorify him; grant, we beseech Thee, that we, being assisted by his merits and prayers, may be delivered from the fires of hell and from all dangers. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Jan. 28, 1924 and May 17, 1932).

Impetration means ‘petitioning or beseeching,’ and/or it may refer to fruits of prayer and good works. This Impetration prayer is attributed to Saint Nicholas, and so it could be considered to be an approved prayer in honor of this saint. Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER VIII. ‘FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED’ – I. Invocation

582. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and, let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days, applicable only to the holy souls (S. C. Ind., Feb. 13, 1908; S. P. Ap., May 17, 1927).

This prayer is specifically mentioned in Grant 29 as carrying an indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence, applicable only to the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite lauds or vespers from the Office of the Dead or the prayer Eternal rest.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. V. MISSIONS FOR THE PEOPLE – I. A PRAYER FOR THE SUCCESS OF A MISSION

633. O Jesus, most holy Redeemer, our Master and our King, it is to Thy Sacred Heart, that ocean of love and goodness, that we owe the inestimable blessing of a mission. Touched with compassion at the sight of our miseries and the eternal unhappiness that threatens us, Thou hast resolved to save us. The missionaries who are coming to us are Thy representatives; in Thy person they will break for us the bread of God's Word and will bring to us the joy of forgiveness. Grant, O Lord, that we may be faithful to Thy grace and correspond zealously with the advances of Thy mercy. Let the preaching of Thy eternal truths enlighten and quicken our minds, and deeply move our hearts, so that we may realize our shortcomings and sincerely repent of them. To the poor souls plunged in the darkness of ignorance and error do Thou grant the light of faith. To those who have saddened Thee by a wicked life, do Thou give the grace of a sincere conversion. Bestow fresh fervor upon the lukewarm, and upon the just true progress in the way of virtue. Send forth Thy Holy Spirit upon all of us, and the face of this parish (or this place) shall be renewed. And thou, O Mary, immaculate Virgin and Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the refuge and advocate of poor sinners; the more guilty they are, the more claim they have upon thy tenderness. It is for this reason that we make bold to implore thy powerful and motherly protection with all confidence. Our salvation is in Thy hands, plead our cause and intercede for us with thy divine Son. Saint N ..., Patron of the parish of N..., pray for us during the blessed days of this Mission. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days in places, where missions have been publicly announced beforehand to the people, up to the beginning of the same (S. C. of the Holy Office, Feb. 27, 1913, S. P. Ap., May 17, 1935)

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. Refer to the above (# 163) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding mental prayer.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. V. MISSIONS FOR THE PEOPLE – II. A PRAYER AFTER A MISSION

634. Jesus Christ, who for my sake didst will to be nailed to the Cross, I give Thee thanks for all the benefits of Thy love which Thou hast bestowed upon me during this sacred mission. Behold, once again I am persuaded that only one thing is needful, that is to say, the salvation of my one and only immortal soul. Wherefore I firmly resolve to avoid mortal sin above all things, as well as every voluntary and proximate occasion thereof, especially the sin of ..., which has been the chief cause of my spiritual ruin. Further, I earnestly desire to avoid venial sin and all perverse attachment thereto; and I engage myself to fulfill faithfully and conscientiously all the duties of my state of life, and to direct my entire life according to Thy most holy will. Moreover, I promise Thee, good Jesus, to be instant in prayer every day of my life, and to have recourse to prayer, especially when temptation presses upon me. I resolve to keep holy the Lord's day, and to approach Thy holy Table frequently and devoutly. Finally I offer unto Thee my whole life and, in particular, my labors and my sufferings. Bless me and all who have taken part with me in this sacred mission. Give me, Lord Jesus, Thy Mother to be my special Patroness, and be Thou my consolation and my joy even to the blessed end of my life. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days, within the year that follows a mission (S. C. of the Holy office, Jan 29, 1914; S. P. Ap., May 17, 1935) NOTE: For indulgences granted to the who attend the sacred sermons during the missions see n. 692c.

VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – II. For the Sanctification of the Clergy

659. A Prayer - O Jesus, eternal High Priest, divine Sacrificer, Thou who in an unspeakable burst of love for men, Thy brethren, didst cause the Christian priesthood to spring forth from Thy Sacred Heart, vouchsafe to pour forth upon Thy priests continual living streams of infinite love.

Live in them, transform them into Thee; make them, by Thy grace, fit instruments of Thy mercy; do Thou act in them and through them, and grant, that they may become wholly one with Thee by their faithful imitation of Thy virtues; and, in Thy Name and by the strength of Thy spirit, may they do the works which Thou didst accomplish for the salvation of the world.

Divine Redeemer of souls, behold how great is the multitude of those who still sleep in the darkness of error; reckon up the number of those unfaithful sheep who stray to the edge of the precipice; consider the throngs of the poor, the hungry, the ignorant and the feeble who groan in their abandoned condition.

Return to us in the person of Thy priests; truly live again in them; act through them and pass once more through the world, teaching, forgiving, comforting, sacrificing and renewing the sacred bonds of love between the Heart of God and the heart of man. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days once a day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if the daily recitation of this prayer is continued for a month (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, March 3, 1905, exhib. Feb. 13, 1911; S. P. Ap, May 17, 1927)

Under Grant 5, a partial indulgence is available for those who pray for the intentions of ‘DAYS DESIGNATED UNIVERSALLY FOR A CERTAIN RELIGIOUS INTENTION.’ World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests takes place on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (between May 29 – July 2). Therefor this prayer should be an option to use for this Grant.

Prayers for universal intentions do not need to be approved, nor (as far as I know) do they have to be said only on that universally designated day. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, on days universally designated to foster certain religious intentions (e.g., the promotion of priestly and religious vocations, the pastoral care of the sick and infirm, strengthening the profession of faith in young people, and assisting others to lead a holy life, etc.), piously assist at celebrations of this kind; however, those who pray for these same intentions may gain a partial indulgence.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” - – XXXIV. FOR THE SANCTIFICATION OF FESTIVAL DAYS

700. A PRAYER – Most glorious Patriarch, Saint Joseph, obtain, we beseech Thee, from our Lord Jesus Christ His most plentiful blessings upon all those who keep festival days holy; and grant that those who profane them may realize, while there is yet time, how great is the evil they commit and the punishments they draw upon themselves both in this present life and in the life to come; and grant that they may be speedily converted.

O most faithful Saint Joseph, thou who in thine earthly life wast ever faithful in keeping the law of God, grant that the day may soon come, when all Christian people shall refrain from those works that are forbidden on festival days, devote themselves earnestly to the salvation of their souls and give glory to God: Who liveth and reigneth for ever and ever. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days (Pius X, Audience May 30, 1905, exhib. Dec. 1, 1905; S. P. Ap., May 17, 1935).

A partial indulgence is available through Grant 19, prayers in honor of St. Joseph. This grant says that a prayer must be ‘duly approved,’ which it is. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who invoke St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a duly approved prayer.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
