Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
The full written outline of the requirements for a partial or plenary indulgence, found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice, may be omitted if not all of the information is unique or notable. (You will see three dots when there is a break in text …)
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – IX. Our Lady, Comfort of the Afflicted
420. A Prayer - O Mary Immaculate, our Mother and Consolation, I take refuge in thy most loving heart with all the confidence of which I am capable; thou shalt be the dearest object of my love and veneration. To thee, who art the dispenser of the treasures of heaven, I shall always have recourse in my sorrows to have peace, in my doubts to have light, in my dangers to be defended, in all my needs to obtain thy assistance. Be therefore my refuge, my strength, my consolation, O Mary the Consoler! At the hour of my death, graciously receive the last sighs of my heart and obtain for me a place in thy heavenly home, where all hearts shall praise with one accord the adorable Heart of Jesus for evermore as well as thy most lovable heart, O Mary. Our tender Mother, Comforter of the afflicted, pray for us who have recourse to thee. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions if this prayer is devoutly repeated every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Jan. 15, 192l and May 16, 1932).
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of Our Lady, Comfort of the Afflicted
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. III. “IN HONOR OF THE HOLY APOSTLES” – I. The Holy Apostles, Peter and Paul
482. Petitions - O holy Apostles, Peter and Paul, I choose you this day and for ever to be my special patrons and advocates; thee, Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles; because thou art the Rock, upon which Almighty God hath built His Church; thee, Saint Paul, because thou wast fore-chosen by God as the Vessel of election and the Preacher of truth in the whole world. Obtain for me, I pray you, lively faith, firm hope and burning love; complete detachment from myself, contempt of the world, patience in adversity, humility in prosperity, attention in prayer, purity of heart, a right intention in all my works, diligence in fulfilling the duties of my state of life, constancy in my resolutions, resignation to the will of God and perseverance in the grace of God even unto death; that so, by means of your intercession and your glorious merits, I may be able to overcome the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil, and may be made worthy to appear before the chief and eternal Shepherd of souls, Jesus Christ, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth for endless ages, to enjoy His presence and love Him forever. Amen.
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
V. Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth,
R. They shall be mindful of Thy Name, O Lord.
Let us pray.
O God, whose right hand raised up blessed Peter, when he walked upon the water and began to sink, and thrice delivered his fellow-Apostle Paul from the depths of the sea, when he suffered shipwreck: graciously hear us and grant, by the merits of them both, that we also may attain unto everlasting glory: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, for the daily recitation of these petitions (S. C. Ind., June 18, 1876; S. P. Ap., July 21, 1931 and May 16, 1933).
I am not sure what the difference between a ‘petition’ and a ‘prayer’ is in this circumstance, so we will be treating this as a prayer. Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” - SAINT LUCY FILIPPINI, VIRGIN
578. A Prayer – O Saint Lucy, who, not content with sanctifying thyself by the fervent and constant practice of the choicest virtues, didst devote thyself zealously to the particular mission of instructing young girls and women in the mysteries of the faith and the precepts of Christian morality, and didst found also a special Institute for Teachers, which was to perpetuate thy work with piety and learning, obtain also for us from thy heavenly Bridegroom the grace not only to live holily, but also to pour forth upon other souls His sweet radiance of light and love, in order that in the eventide of our lives we may close out eyes to the fugitive light of earth and open them in the blessed light of eternity. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions if this oration is devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., May 16, 1939)
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
