CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XVIII. Saint Vincent Ferrer, Confessor

523. A Prayer - O Saint Vincent, glorious worker of miracles, who in thy lifetime didst convert so many sinners by preaching the last judgment, grant that we too, by meditating on the four last things, may be enabled to obtain from Almighty God through thine intercession the healing of all our spiritual maladies. Let thy heart be tender toward us, O mighty Saint: stretch forth thy hand over us, and obtain for us those graces for the welfare of both soul and body, which we so earnestly ask of thee. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., June 22, 1935).

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IV. - “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.

141. Hail true Body born of Mary the Virgin. An indulgence of 500 days; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this ejaculation has been recited devoutly every day for a month (S. P. Ap., June 23, 1939).

I am still not certain about ejaculations (ejaculatory prayers). If they are more of an invocation, which they are often associated with, they would be under General Grant 1. If they are more like prayers, they would be under Grant 15. Both offer partial indulgences, but due to how short ejaculations are I will categorize them as an invocation.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VII. “THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS” – IV. Hymns

246. Cor, arca legem continens - O Heart! Thou ark where lies the law, Not of the servitude of old, But that from which we pardon draw, And grace and mercies manifold.

Heart, the pure and stainless shrine Where that new covenant has lain: Temple than Salem's more divine; Veil, better than its veil in twain.

With such a wound as must appear Love willed that Thou shouldst wounded be, That we might all the wounds revere, Which love doth bear invisibly.

'Neath this, love's symbol, suffering twice, Things mystical and bloody both Christ, as a priest, in sacrifice To Heaven uplifted, nothing loth.

Who would not love for love repay? What man, redeemed, could love refuse To this Heart, or herein, for aye, His tabernacle fail to choose?

Jesu, to Thee be glory given, Who from Thy Heart dost grace outpour; To Father and to Paraclete Be endless praise for evermore. Amen. (Roman Breviary; tr. J. Fitzpatrick).

An indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the daily recitation of this hymn throughout the month (S. P. Ap., June 23 1935)

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VIII. “JESUS CHRIST THE KING” – I. Invocations

268. Jesus, King and center of all hearts, by the coming of Thy kingdom, grant us peace. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., June 23, 1923)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER VIII. ‘FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED’ – VI. Prayers

600. (For a man deceased) - Incline Thine ear, O Lord, unto our prayers, wherein we humbly pray Thee to show Thy mercy upon the soul of Thy servant N., whom Thou hast commanded to pass out of this world, that Thou wouldst place him in the region of peace and light, and bid him be a partaker with Thy Saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

(For a woman deceased) - We beseech Thee, O Lord, according to Thy loving-kindness, have mercy upon the soul of Thy handmaiden N., and, now that she is set free from the defilements of this mortal flesh, restore her to her heritage of everlasting salvation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal).

An indulgence of 500 days for each prayer. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if either of these prayers is said devoutly every day for a month (S. P. Ap., March 14, 1923 and June 24, 1936).

NOTE: A prayer to Our Blessed Lady of Intercession for the faithful departed is found under n. 434.

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

P.S. Remember that in Grant 29, prayers said at a cemetery for the departed offers a partial indulgence. No specific prayer is required, but a prayer like this would be fitting.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” - Art. II. “FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE” – II. Devout Exercises

607. The faithful who spend at least half an hour in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in any church or public oratory to obtain vocations to the priesthood, and who, in addition go to confession and receive Holy Communion, may gain: A plenary indulgence (S. P. Ap., May 24, 1921 and June 24, 1936).

Under Grant 7, spending a half an hour before the Blessed Sacrament offers a plenary indulgence regardless of what is prayed for/the intention. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit the Blessed Sacrament for adoration lasting at least a half hour; A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit the Blessed Sacrament for adoration;

However, do remember that praying for Vocations is granted a Universal day of prayer, which would be covered under Grant 5

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VI. “IN HONOR OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD” – IV. Prayers

218. O Precious Blood of Jesus, infinite price of sinful man's redemption, both drink and laver of our souls, Thou who dost plead continually the cause of man before the throne of infinite mercy; from the depths of my heart, I adore Thee, and so far as I am able, I would requite Thee for the insults and outrages which Thou dost continually receive from human beings, and especially from those who rashly dare to blaspheme Thee. Who would not bless this Blood of infinite value? Who doth not feel within himself the fire of the love of Jesus who shed it all for us? What would be my fate, had I not been redeemed by this divine Blood? Who hath drawn it from the veins of my Saviour, even to the last drop? Ah, this surely was the work of love. O infinite love, which has given us this saving balm! O balm beyond all price, welling up from the fountain of infinite love, grant that every heart and every tongue may be enabled to praise Thee, magnify Thee and give Thee thanks both now and for evermore. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Pius VII, Oct. 18, 1815; S. P. Ap., June 25, 1932).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
