CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – III. Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, Confessor

496. Prayer - Saint Aloysius, adorned with angelic virtues, I, thy most unworthy client, commend to thee most earnestly the chastity of my mind and body. I beseech thee, for the sake of thine angelic purity, to commend me to the immaculate Lamb, Christ Jesus, and to His most holy Mother, the Virgin of virgins; and to protect me from every grievous sin. Permit me not to defile myself by any spot of impurity; nay, when thou seest me in temptation or in the danger of sin, banish far from my heart every unclean thought and desire. Awaken in me the thought of eternity and of Jesus crucified; imprint deeply in my heart a lively sense of the holy fear of God; set me on fire with the love of God; grant me the grace to imitate thee on earth that I may worthily enjoy the possession of God in heaven with thee. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

V. Pray for us, Saint Aloysius,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

O God, the Giver of all heavenly gifts, who in the angelic youth, Aloysius, didst join wondrous innocence with equal penance: be entreated by his merits and his prayers, and grant unto us who have not followed him in his innocence the grace to imitate him in his penance. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days once a day. A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions for the daily and devout recitation of this prayer (S. C. Ind., March 6, 1802; S. P. Ap., June 19, 1933).

Note: Another prayer to St. Aloysius Gonzaga, to be said by young men, is found under n. 768; an invocation to be said by clerics, is found under n. 730.

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – I. For the Sovereign Pontiff

650. Invocation - Lord Jesus, shelter our Holy Father the Pope under the protection of Thy Sacred Heart. Be Thou his light, his strength and his consolation. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Jan. 18, 1924 and June 19, 1933).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XXII. MENTAL PRAYER

688. The faithful who devote at least a quarter hour to mental prayer, are granted: An indulgence of 5 years; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they do this every day for a month (Benedict XIV, Apostolic Brief, Dec. 16, 1746; S. P. Ap., June 19, 1933).

This Traditional indulgence directly corespondents to a current indulgence for Mental Prayer. However, the current indulgence does not require a certain amount of a time. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” – III. PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY CLERICS IN HOLY ORDERS AND BY PRIESTS - (A) FOR A HOLY LIFE

733. A Prayer – Dearest Jesus, who of Thy great goodness hast called me to be Thy follower in preference to countless others and hast raised me to the high dignity of Thy priesthood, bestow upon me abundantly, I pray, Thy divine help in fulfilling my duties in a right spirit. I beseech Thee, Lord Jesus, to stir up in me Thy grace both today and always, that grace which is in me by reason of the laying on of hands of the bishop. O mighty Physician of souls, heal me in such wise that I may never be entangled in sinful habits, but that I may renounce them all and be enabled to please Thee even to the day of my death. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days once a day (S. C. Ind., Aug. 14, 1884; S. P. Ap., June 19, 1933).

There is no category of prayers that can only be said by certain groups of people for an indulgence. Although it may be fitting for priests to recite it is not required or limited to priests. This prayer and every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
