CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXXV. SAINT FIDELIS OF SIGMARINGEN PROTOMARTYR OF THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH

548. Responsory - Fidelis Vir tu nomine - Thy name, Fidelis, doth proclaim Thy living faith and doctrine's fame; False teachers bow before thy word, Thy blood bears witness to thy Lord.

Let Heaven's light, to thee we pray, Within our hearts and minds hold sway; Let faith and hope and holy love Shine in us brightly from above.

Through thee the halt, the lame, the blind, New health and strength and light do find; To speechless tongues, speech thou dost give; Thou makest dying infants live.

Let Heaven's light, to thee we pray, Within our hearts and minds hold sway: Let faith and hope and holy love Shine in us brightly from above.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost.

Let Heaven's light, to thee we pray, Within our hearts and minds hold sway.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Let faith and hope and holy love Shine in us brightly from above. (tr. C. E. Spence).

Antiphon. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

V. Pray for us, O blessed Fidelis,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

O God, who hast vouchsafed to glorify blessed Fidelis, inflamed with seraphic ardor of spirit, with the palm of martyrdom and the fame of miracles in the propagation of the true faith: by his merits and intercession, we beseech Thee so to strengthen us by Thy grace in faith and charity, that we may deserve to be found faithful in Thy service unto death. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days, once a day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this responsory, together with the versicles and prayer, is said with devotion every day for a month (S. P. Ap., May 1, 1923 and July 21, 1935).

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
