Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. V. “THE HOLY ROSARY” – (B) AS PRACTICED IN THE VALLEY OF POMPEII – I. A VISIT
400. The faithful who devoutly visit the Pompeian image of Our Lady of the holy Rosary, exposed for veneration in some church, public or semi-public oratory (this last for those who may lawfully use it), may gain: An indulgence of 300 days; A plenary indulgence on the 8th day of May and on the Feast of the holy Rosary, if, in addition, they make their confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of His Holiness (Apostolic Brief, July 20, 1925).
As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grant 4, which offer a partial indulgences for witnessing to the faith.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. V. “THE HOLY ROSARY” – (B) AS PRACTICED IN THE VALLEY OF POMPEII – V. A Prayer
404. O Virgin immaculate and Queen of the Rosary, in these days of dead faith and triumphant impiety, thou hast been pleased to establish thy throne as Queen and Mother in the ancient land of Pompeii, once the home of paganism. From that place, where men of old worshiped idols and evil spirits, do thou this day, as the Mother of divine graces scatter far and wide the treasures of heavens mercy. Ah, from that throne where thou reignest in mercy, turn, dear Mother, thine eyes of pity even upon me and be gracious unto me who have so great need of thine assistance. Show thyself to me, even as thou hast shown thyself to so many others, a true Mother of mercy: "Monstra te esse Matrem" (Show Thyself a Mother); while with all my heart I salute thee and invoke thee as my sovereign Lady and Queen of the most holy Rosary. Hail, holy Queen. An indulgence of 300 days (Apostolic Brief, July 20, 1925). NOTE: Another prayer for the conversion of non-Catholics is found under number 628.
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – XXI. OUR LADY REFUGE OF SINNERS
438. A Prayer - Almighty and merciful God, who in blessed Mary ever Virgin hast set up a refuge and a help for sinners, grant that we, under her protection, may be absolved from all our sins and may obtain the blessed effect of Thy great mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily recitation of this prayer (S. P. Ap., July 20, 1934).
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of OUR LADY REFUGE OF SINNERS
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” - IX. SAINT CAMILLUS OF LELLIS, CONFESSOR
506. A Devout Exercise - The faithful who pray devoutly on any Sunday in honor of Saint Camillus of Lellis, with the intention of so continuing for seven successive Sundays, are granted: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. C. Ind., Aug. 8, 1853; S. P. Ap., July 20, 1933). NOTE: A prayer to St. Camillus for the sick is found under n. 668.
As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.
P.S. Seven days would not be longe enough for this to be a novena.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXXIII. Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother, Confessor
545. Prayer of Petition - Let us adore and give thanks to God the Father everlasting, who, of the great love He bore us, was pleased to send His only-begotten Son into the world to suffer and die on the gibbet of the Cross; and let us beseech Him, for the sake of His Passion and death and by the intercession of Saint Gabriel, that most loving follower of our crucified Lord, to grant us the favor for which we pray.…
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
Let us adore and give thanks to God the eternal Son, who, becoming man and dying for us upon the Cross, left us Mary most holy to be our Mother; and let us beseech Him, by the merits of this sorrowful Virgin Mother and by the intercession of Saint Gabriel, who was her most devoted servant, to grant us the favor for which we pray.…
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
Let us adore and give thanks to God the eternal Spirit, who of His infinite goodness communicates Himself to our souls to make them holy; and let us beseech Him, by the merit of the same divine goodness and by the intercession of Saint Gabriel, who in a special manner shared therein and corresponded thereto, to grant us the favor for which we pray…
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
V. Pray for us, Saint Gabriel,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
O God, who didst teach blessed Gabriel to have the sorrows of Thy most dear Mother in perpetual remembrance, and through her didst glorify him with the fame of holiness and miracles; grant unto us, by his intercession and example, so to share the sorrows of Thy Mother that we may be saved by her maternal protection: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days once a day. A plenary indulgence once a month, on the usual conditions, if these prayers have been recited daily with devotion (S. P. Ap., Oct. 25, 1920 and July 20, 1934).
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
APPENDIX. “Indulgences attached to visiting certain holy places in Rome” – IX. THE PENITENTIAL WAND
781. The faithful, who on any day of the year, approach the minor Penitentiaries in the Lateran, Vatican, Ostian, and Liberian Basilicas and allow themselves to be touched by the penitential wand, if animated by sentiments of Christian humility and sincere contrition, are granted: An indulgence of 300 days, once a day.
Those, however, who present themselves to the most Eminent Cardinal, the major Penitentiary, when he is fulfilling his office on the appointed greater days of the week in the four Basilicas just mentioned, and allow themselves to be touched by the penitential wand in a similar manner, if animated by the same sentiments as above, are granted: An indulgence of 7 years (S. P. Ap., July 20, 1942)
This indulgence, as a whole, is Notwithstanding. The only thing I can think of to pull from this traditional indulgence is that a partial indulgence may still be offered under the General Grants.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
