Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
The full written outline of the requirements for a partial or plenary indulgence, found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice, may be omitted if not all of the information is unique or notable. (You will see three dots when there is a break in text …)
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XL. To obtain the gift of continence.
714. Lord, burn our reins and our hearts with the fire of Thy Holy Spirit, that we may serve Thee with chaste bodies and pure minds. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal) An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Jan. 6, 1935).
There is no indulgence category regarding the ‘gaining of continence.’ This is also not a cause with a DAY DESIGNATED UNIVERSALLY FOR it. However, all prayers may be applicable for a partial indulgence under Grant 15.
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.
297. My Mother, deliver me from mortal sin. Hail Mary three times. An indulgence of 300 days (Apostolic Brief, Feb. 8, 1900; S. P. Ap., Jan. 7, 1935).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.
298. O Mary, bless this house where thy Name is always blessed. Praise forever be to Mary Immaculate, the ever-Virgin Mother, blessed amongst women, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Queen of Paradise. An indulgence of 300 days (Plus X, Audience, Feb. 26, 1905, exhib. Jan. 8 1906)
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1
Refer to the above (# 297) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.
299. O Mary, our hope, have pity on us. An indulgence of 300 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, Jan. 3, 1906, exhib. Jan. 8, 1906).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1
Refer to the above (# 297) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” - IV. “PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY PRIESTS” – (A) To obtain Holiness of life.
746. A Prayer - to be said by priests on the Anniversary of their Ordination - Most lovable Jesus, today, the anniversary of the day on which, in spite of my misery, Thou didst deign to raise me to the dignity of the Priesthood by an impulse of Thy goodness, and to make me Thy minister and messenger as well as the dispenser of Thy sublime mysteries of wisdom and grace, my heart is filled with joy and grateful memories towards Thee because of this singular favor conferred upon me, but it is afflicted with sadness and grief, inasmuch as I have not corresponded with this great gift in the manner or to the extent I should have done. To my mind, as it reviews the past, there comes a brilliant light, even though it is somewhat obscured by the darkness: Thou, indeed, O Jesus, both in Thy light and in my darkness, dost shine by reason of Thy mercy, and from my heart bursts forth an exultant hymn of glory.
O Lord, while I acknowledge and deplore in all humility my unworthiness I earnestly beseech the continual help of Thy infinite goodness, assisted by which I may be able to conform my life to the high office committed to me, enlightened thereby may I be enabled to impart daily to my fellow-men richer fruits of Thy Redemption, finally strengthened thereby may I be strong enough to continue on this mortal journey in a worthy manner, until my last day shall dawn, when, having finished my earthly pilgrimage, I may lay my weary head upon Thy bosom, and enjoy for ever Thy light and peace.
Most holy Virgin, thou who didst receive on Calvary at the foot of the Cross in the person of the beloved disciple all priests under thy maternal protection, pray for me. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary Indulgence on the usual conditions (S. P. Ap., Jan. 8, 1939)
In the Manuel of Indulgences there is a Grant 27, which mentions a plenary indulgence for priests celebrating select anniversaries of their priestly ordinations, who then renew before God their promise of faithfully fulfilling the duties of their vocation. All though this prayer is intended to be said by priests on their anniversaries, it doesn't appear that the intention of this prayer would fit the theme of a renewed promise. Therefore, I revert to Grant 15 for only a partial indulgence.
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
P.S. I think that it’s worth noting that under Grant 5, a partial indulgence is available for those who pray for the intentions of ‘DAYS DESIGNATED UNIVERSALLY FOR A CERTAIN RELIGIOUS INTENTION.’ In June, on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated ‘World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests.’ Prayers for universal intentions do not need to be approved, nor (as far as I know) do they have to be said on that universally designated day. So maybe this prayer can be used for this Grant?
This concluded the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In it’s last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
