List of Traditional materials we will be looking at today, and the current/withstanding grants that they satisfy (directly or indirectly).

    • partial indulgence… Grant 22

NOTE:

  • Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under Grant 15.

  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

  • The full written outline of the requirements for a partial or plenary indulgence, found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice, may be omitted if not all of the information is unique or notable. (You will see three dots when there is a break in text …)

CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” - Art. IV “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.

131. Soul of Christ, be my sanctification.

Body of Christ, be my salvation.

Blood of Christ, fill all my veins.

Water from Christ's side, wash out my stains.

Passion of Christ, my comfort be.

O good Jesu, listen to me.

In Thy wounds I fain would hide,

Ne'er to be parted from Thy side.

Guard me should the foe assail me.

Call me when my life shall fail me.

Bid me come to Thee above,

With all Thy Saints to sing Thy love,

World without end. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days. An indulgence of 7 years, if recited after Holy Communion. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, when this prayer has been said devoutly every day. (S. C. Ind., Jan. 9, 1854). (Anima Christi)

This Traditional indulgence is very interesting. For one thing, it is listed under ‘Ejaculations and Invocations,’ but it is specifically mentioned to be a ‘prayer’ in it’s credentials. This prayer is also currently listed in the ‘Manuel of Indulgences,’ under Grant 8. This grant says that a prayer must be ‘duly approved,’ which it is. It has one approval (from the S. C. Ind.) to be considered a traditional indulgence. And then I presume it must have gained another approval to be added to the Manuel of Indulgences itself. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, using any duly approved pious formula, make an act of thanksgiving after Communion.

A final reason why this indulgence is interesting is that, by being listed as a prayer for “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT,” in the old text, I believe that it may also apply for another current indulgence, under Grant 7. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' for this Grant is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who offer any duly approved prayer to Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” – IV. Prayers

371. O pure and immaculate and likewise blessed Virgin, who art the sinless Mother of thy Son, the mighty Lord of the universe, thou who art inviolate and altogether holy, the hope of the hopeless and sinful, we sing thy praises. We bless thee, as full of every grace, thou who didst bear the God-Man: we all bow low before thee; we invoke thee and implore thine aid. Rescue us, O holy and inviolate Virgin, from every necessity that presses upon us and from all the temptations of the devil. Be our intercessor and advocate at the hour of death and judgment; deliver us from the fire that is not extinguished and from the outer darkness; make us worthy of the glory of thy Son, O dearest and most clement Virgin Mother. Thou indeed art our only hope most sure and sacred in God's sight, to whom be honor and glory, majesty and dominion for ever and ever world without end. Amen (St. Ephrem the Syrian). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if the daily recitation of this prayer be continued for a month (S. P. Ap., Dec. 21, 1920 and Jan. 9, 1933).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17 for Marian Prayers, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – IV. Our Lady, Help of Christians

413. Most holy and immaculate Virgin Mary, our tender Mother and mighty Help of Christians, we dedicate ourselves wholly to thy dear love and holy service. We dedicate to thee our minds and all our thoughts, our hearts and all our affections, our bodies and all our senses and all our strength; we promise to be ever willing to labor for the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls.

Meanwhile, do thou, O incomparable Virgin, who hast ever been the helper of the Christian people, continue to show thyself to be so in these our days. Bring low the enemies of our holy religion and frustrate their wicked designs. Enlighten and strengthen our Bishops and our priests; keep them always in close union and obedience to the Pope, their infallible Teacher; preserve thoughtless youth from sin and irreligion; increase holy vocations and multiply the number of the sacred ministers, that by means of them the kingdom of Jesus Christ may be preserved amongst us and be extended even to the uttermost parts of the earth.

We pray thee, moreover, dear Mother, to keep thine eyes of mercy ever turned upon young men and maidens, who are exposed to so many dangers, as well as upon poor sinners and those who are dying; be thou, O Mary, to them all a source of sweet hope, thou who art the Mother of mercy and the Gate of heaven.

But also for ourselves do we pour forth our supplications, O mighty Mother of God. Teach us to show forth in our lives thy virtues, especially angelic purity, deep humility and burning love; so by our demeanor, our words and our example may we, according as it is given to us, be living images of thy blessed Son Jesus in the midst of the world, and make thee known and loved, in the sure hope that thus we may succeed in bringing many souls to salvation.

Grant unto us, O Mary, thou Help of Christians, to be gathered under thy maternal protection. May the thought of the love thou bearest toward thy devoted clients be unto us so great a source of strength as to make us victors over the enemies of our salvation, both in life and in death, that so we may come to stand about thee in the beauty of paradise. Amen.

An indulgence of 500 days (Apostolic Brief, March 10, 1900; S. P. Ap., Jan. 9, 1934).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once.

Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of Our Lady, Help of Christians.

CHAPTER VI. “THE HOLY ANGELS” – Art. V. “THE GUARDIAN ANGEL” – II. A Devout Exercise

453. The faithful who devoutly recite some prayers in honor of their Guardian Angel at any season of the year, with the intention of persevering therein for nine successive days, may gain: An indulgence of 5 years once, on any day; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions at the end of the novena,(Pius IX, Audience Jan.3, 1849; S. C. of Bishops Now. 26, 1876, 5 Bishop and Religious, Jan, 28, 1850; S. C. Ind., Nov. 26, 1876; S. P. Ap., Jan. 9, 1931).

Even though there is a small section in the newly revised Grants for our Guardian Angels, this devout pracractice would fall under Grant 22, for novenas. However, there may be less of a chance for a novena to be available in honor of our Guardian Angels, and more of a chance for novenas to be available for, let’s say, holy days or current needs within the world. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly assist at public novenas.

This concluded the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
