CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – IV. Prayers
105. O Jesus! I come to Thee! Thou art the Way that I would follow in obedience to Thy commandments, Thy counsels and Thine example; let me walk after Thee in the way of obedience, of self-denial and of sacrifice, which leads to heaven and Thee! O Jesus, Thou art the Truth; Thou art "the true Light which enlighteneth every man coming into this world". I believe in Thee! I believe in Thy Gospel; I would know Thee in order to love Thee; I would make Thee known in order to make Thee loved. O Jesus! Thou art the Life, through Thy sanctifying grace which is the life of our souls; through Thy words which are "the words of everlasting life"; through Thy Eucharist which is "the living bread come down from heaven"; through Thy Heart which is the fountain of life for individual souls and for society. I cling to Thy Word with all my heart; I hunger for the living Bread of Thy Eucharist; I open my heart without reserve to the life-giving streams from Thy Sacred Heart; I unite myself inwardly to all Its intentions. Ah, may this divine Heart reign universally over the children of the Church and over all humanity. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, for the daily devout recitation of this prayer (S. P. Ap., Dec. 1, 1920 and Dec. 28, 1932).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. V. “JESUS CRUCIFIED” – VI. Pious Exercises
197. The faithful who on Friday at any hour according to the local custom, at the sound of the bell in memory of the Passing of our Lord Jesus Christ, recite five times Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be, on bended knees, if this can be conveniently done, and add moreover for the intention of the Holy Father, this prayer: “We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee; Because by Thy holy Cross Thou hast redeemed the world”, or some similar prayer, may gain:
An indulgence of 10 years; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they devoutly preform this devotion on each Friday for a month (S. P. Ap. Jan. 30, 1933).
The same indulgences can be gained in places where it is not the custom to sound a bell, if the prayers are said, either in the first hours after midday in which, according to the ancient reckoning, the ninth hour fell, at which time, as the holy Evangelists testify, Jesus Christ breathed forth His spirit on the Cross, or at another hour at which the aforesaid commemoration is wont to be made according to the custom of divers places. (S. P. Ap., Dec. 28, 1935).
As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – I. For the Sovereign Pontiff
651. A Day Dedicated to the Soverign Pontiff- The faithful who devoutly assist at any of the religious services held every year, on the day dedicated to the Sovereign Pontiff, either to celebrate solemnly the praises of the Roman Pontiff and to call to mind the countless benefits which he has hitherto bestowed upon the whole world, or to give thanks to God for the preservation of the life of the supreme Ruler of the Church and at the same time to obtain from Almighty God the help he needs in ruling the Church, exposed as she is to so many dangers, may gain: An indulgence of 10 years, if a prayer for the intentions of his Holiness is added; A plenary indulgence, if in addition they go to confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Pope (S. C. Ар., Dec. 29, 1933).
VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XIV. ASSISTING AT THE FIRST MASS OF NEWLY-ORDAINED PRIESTS AND KISSING THE PALMS OF THEIR HANDS
676. a) The faithful to devoutly assist at the first Mass of any priest, may gain: An indulgence of 7 years; A plenary indulgence, if they are kinsmen of the newly ordained priest within the third degree (inclusive) of consanguinity, and further have obtained the remission of their sins, received the Bread of Heaven and prayed for the intentions of His Holiness the Pope (S. C. Ind., Jan. 16, 1886; S. P. Ap., March 18, 1932).
b) Those who devoutly kiss the palms of the hands of a newly ordained priest, both on the day of ordination and on the day of the first Mass are granted: An indulgence of 100 days (S. P. Ap., Dec. 29, 1934).
Note: The indulgences granted to a priest celebrating his first Mass are found under n. 742.
Only part of indulgence still stands, Under Grant 27. “The faithful to devoutly assist at the first Mass of any priest.” The rest of this traditional indulgence, including kinsman-ship or kissing the priests palms, is “Notwithstanding.” The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to 1° a priest celebrating his first Mass before the people on a chosen day; 2° the faithful who devoutly assist at such a Mass.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
