  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

25. O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise Him, all ye peoples.

For His mercy is confirmed upon us: and the truth of the Lord remaineth for ever (Psalm 116).

An indulgence of 500 days. An indulgence of three years, if this prayer is said publicly. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when it has been repeated with devotion daily for the entire month (S. P. Ap., Dec. 22, 1936).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

Because this is also taken from Scripture, it would be applicable under Grant 30. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who read the Sacred Scriptures as spiritual reading, from a text approved by competent authority and with the reverence due to the divine word, for at least a half an hour; if the time is less, the indulgence will be partial. (indulgences are granted, as mentioned above, for those who *listen under certain circumstance)

CHAPTER IV. “GOD THE HOLY GHOST” – I. Invocations

277. O Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth, come into our hearts; shed the brightness of Thy light upon the nations, that they may please Thee in unity of faith. An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. Ind., July 31, 1897; S. P. Ap., Dec. 22, 1932)

CHAPTER IV. “GOD THE HOLY GHOST” – VI. Prayers

287. Come, Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created;

R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray.

God, who didst teach the hearts of Thy faithful people by sending them the light of Thy Holy Spirit, grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in His holy comfort. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this prayer is recited daily for an entire month (S. C. Ind., May 8, 1907; S. P. Ap., Dec. 22, 1932).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” – V. Prayers

57. In order that I may be a living act of perfect love, I offer myself as a whole burnt offering to Thy tender love, beseeching Thee to consume me continually, letting my soul overflow with the floods of infinite tenderness that are found in Thee, that so I may become a martyr of Thy love, O my God! Let this martyrdom make me ready to appear before Thee and at last cause me to expire; let my soul cast itself without delay into the everlasting arms of Thy merciful love. With every beat of my heart I desire, O my dearly Beloved, to renew this offering an infinite number of times, until that day when the shadows shall vanish and I shall be able to retell my love in an eternal face-to-face with Thee! (St. Theresa of the Child Jesus). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this act of oblation is repeated devoutly every day for a month (S. P. Ap., July 31, 1923 and Dec. 23, 1935).

Refer to the above (# 287) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding mental prayer.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
