  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXXIV. SAINT PHILIP NERI, CONFESSOR

546. Invocation - Lowly Saint Philip, make intercession to, the immaculate Virgin Mother of God for me. An indulgence of 100 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this invocation is repeated every day for a mouth (S. P. Ap., April 7, 1921).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

P.S. Because this is just an invocation, and not a prayer, I can’t recommend this as a ‘Saint Prayer’ which would qualify under Grant 21. But, perhaps, it could be combine with an approved prayer? I’m not sure.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XLIV. In the time of trial

723. A Prayer - O God, our refuge and our strength, mercifully regard Thy people who cry to Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thy anger, which we justly deserve for our sins. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. An indulgence of 3 years (S. P. Ap., April 7, 1941)

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – IV. Prayers

108. O Lord God, King of heaven and earth, may it please Thee this day to order and to hallow, to rule and to govern our hearts and our bodies, our thoughts, our words and our works, according to Thy law and in the doing of Thy commandments, that we, being helped by Thee, may here and hereafter worthily be saved and delivered by Thee, OSaviour of the world, who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen (Roman Breviary). The faithful who devoutly recite this prayer in the morning may gain: An indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily devout recitation thereof (S. P. Ap., Apr. 8, 1934)

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VII. “THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS” – V. Pious Practices

251. WEARING THE BADGE OF THE SACRED HEART - The faithful who devoutly wear a badge of white wool, suspended from the neck after the manner of a small scapular, with a likeness of the Sacred Heart of Jesus embroidered thereon or otherwise attach, and with the following, or similar words, printed upon it: “Cease, the Heart of Jesus is with us”, or even without any inscription at all, if they say Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be, may gain: An indulgence of 500 days, once a day (Pius IX, Rescript in his own hand, Oct 28 1872, exhib. Dec 18, 1872, Apostolic Brief, March 28 and June 20, 1873; S. P. Ap., April 8, 1936).

This item today would be refereed to as a true scapular. And, according to Grant 14, scapulars are included in a short list of ‘articles of devotion,’ which offer a plenary and partial indulgence. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, on the Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, make prayerful use of an article of devotion, as defined by Norm 15, that has been blessed by the Supreme Pontiff or by any bishop, provided the faithful also make a Profession of Faith using any legitimate formula… A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly use such articles of devotion properly blessed by either a priest or a deacon.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – II. For the Sanctification of the Clergy

658. An Act of Oblation – O Jesus, humbled in the Eucharist to be the source and center of charity of the Catholic Church and the strength of souls, we offer Thee our prayers, our actions, our sufferings in behalf of Thy priests, to the end that each day may behold the wider extension of the Kingdom of Thy Sacred Heart. An indulgence of 300 days once a day (S. P. Ap., April 8, 1919).

Although this prayer glorifies Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament, it is not ‘duly approved.’ So, it can only gain an indulgence under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

This concluded the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
