CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. V. “JESUS CRUCIFIED” – IX. Prayers

208. O Jesus, who in Thy bitter Passion didst become "the most abject of men, a man of sorrows," I venerate Thy sacred Face whereon there once did shine the beauty and sweetness of the Godhead; but now It has become as it were the face of a leper! Nevertheless under those disfigured features, I recognize Thine infinite Love, and I am consumed with desire to love Thee and make Thee loved by all men. The tears which well up so abundantly in Thy sacred eyes appear to me as so many precious pearls that I love to gather up, in order to purchase the souls of poor sinners by means of their infinite value. O Jesus, whose adorable Face ravishes my heart, I implore Thee to fix deep within me Thy divine image and to set me on fire with Thy love, that so I may be found worthy to come to the contemplation of Thy glorious Face in heaven. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. of the Holy Office, June 10, 1915; S. P. Ap., April 5, 1931).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

P.S. For prayers that seem to associate with the Passion, I like to mention the allowance made under Grant 13: Those legitimately impeded can acquire the same indulgence, if they spend some time, e.g., at least a quarter of an hour, in reading and meditating on the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

CHAPTER IV. “GOD THE HOLY GHOST” – VIII. Prayers

290. Come, Holy Ghost, Sanctifier all powerful, God of love, Thou who didst fill the Virgin Mary with grace, Thou who didst wonderfully transform the hearts of the Apostles, Thou who didst endow all Thy martyrs with a miraculous heroism, come and sanctify us. Illumine our minds, strengthen our wills, purify our consciences, rectify our judgments, set our hearts on fire, and preserve us from the misfortune of resisting Thine inspirations. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. P. Ap., Apr. 9, 1940 and Apr. 5, 1941).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers

335. O Mother of God, Mary most holy, how many times by my sins have I merited the pains of hell! Even now the sentence might have been passed, perhaps on the occasion of my very first sin, hast thou not in thy tender pity restrained the hand of divine Justice: and then overcoming my hardness of heart, thou drewest me gently to place my confidence in thee. And oh, how very often should I have fallen in the dangers which beset my steps hadst not thou, loving Mother that thou art, preserved me by the graces thou didst obtain for me. But oh, my Queen, what will thy pity and thy favors avail me, if after all, I became the cause of my own condemnation. If there was once a time when I loved thee not, yet now, next to God, I love thee above all things. Ah, permit not that I should turn my back on thee and on my God who, by means of thee, has granted me so many mercies. Wilt thou endure seeing one of thy servants who loves thee go down into hell? O Mary, what sayest thou? Shall I bring about my own condemnation? I shall most surely do so, if I forsake thee. But who would henceforth have the heart to forsake thee? Who could ever forget the love thou hast borne toward me? No, he assuredly is not lost who faithfully commends himself to thee and has recourse to thee. Ah, my dear Mother, leave me not to my own devices for then I shall surely die. Grant that I may always seek thy protection. Save me, for thou art my hope, save me from the pains of hell, but especially from sin, which alone has power to condemn me to the flames of perdition (St. Alphonsus M. de' Liguori).

Hail Mary three times.

An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, if this prayer be recited daily (S. C. Ind., May 15, 1821; S. P. Ap., April 5, 1936)

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – XXII. OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART

439. A Prayer - Remember, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, what ineffable power thy divine Son hath given thee over His own adorable Heart. Filled with confidence in thy merits, we come before thee and implore thy protection. O heavenly Treasurer of the Heart of Jesus, that Heart which is the inexhaustible source of all graces, which thou mayest open to us at thy good pleasure, in order that from it may flow forth upon mankind the riches of love and mercy, light and salvation, that are contained therein; grant unto us, we beseech thee, the favors which we seek…. We can never, never be refused by thee, and since thou art our Mother, O our Lady of the Sacred Heart, graciously receive our prayers and grant our request. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., April 5, 1949).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. V. “JESUS CRUCIFIED” – II. Offices of the Passion

190. The Little Office of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ – The faithful who recite the little Office of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, in keeping with the prescriptions of canon 932 of the Code of Canon Law, may gain: An indulgence of 300 days for each hour of this Office; An indulgence of 7 years for the entire Office; A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily recitation of the same (S. P. Ap., April 6, 1934).

This indulgence remains today under the current Grant 22 for Little Offices. Though with the exception of that I don’t think that it is required to consult the Code of Canon Law, since that is not mentioned in the ‘Manuel of Indulgences.’ The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who piously recite an approved little office (e.g., of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, or St. Joseph).

This concluded the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
