Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
The full written outline of the requirements for a partial or plenary indulgence, found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice, may be omitted if not all of the information is unique or notable. (You will see three dots when there is a break in text …)
CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VII. “THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS” – VII. Acts of Reparation and Consecration
260. c) My loving Jesus, out of the grateful love I bear Thee, and to make reparation for my unfaithfulness to grace, I give Thee my heart, and I consecrate myself wholly to Thee; and with Thy help I purpose to sin no more.
The faithful who devoutly recite this act of consecration before an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus may obtain: An indulgence of 300 days; A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for its daily devout recitation (Secret Mem., June 9, 1807; S. P. Ap., Mar. 15, 1936 and April 20, 1949).
NOTE: A formula for the consecration of the family to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is found under n. 705.
Grant 1 outlines consecration of a family to (and before an image of) the Sacred Heart of Jesus. However, I believe that n. 705, which is mentioned in the NOTE, is THE prayer that Grant 1 is refering to, in order to gain a plenary indulgence. So, assuming that this is not the correct prayer, I believe this prayer would only gain a partial indulgence under Grant 15.
For reference, this is what Grant 1 says: A plenary indulgence is granted to the members of the family on the day on which it is first consecrated, if at all possible by a priest or deacon, to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus or to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, if they devoutly recite the duly approved prayer before an image of the Sacred Heart or the Holy Family; on the anniversary of the consecration, the indulgence will be partial.
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' for Grant 15 is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VI. FOR A HAPPY DEATH – IV. Prayers
648. Lord Jesu, pour into us the spirit of Thy love, that in the hour of our death we may be worthy to vanquish the enemy and attain unto the heavenly crown: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, provided that this prayer is devoutly said every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Apr. 21, 1936).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.
89. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, grant us Thy peace. An indulgence of 30 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said devoutly every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Apr. 22, 1939).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VII. “THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations
241. Sacred Heart of Jesus, convert all poor blasphemers! An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, if this invocation is repeated daily (S. P. Ap., Nov, 20, 1925 and April 22, 1949).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1.. Refer to the above (# 89) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers
350. Hail, most gracious Mother of mercy, hail, Mary, for whom we fondly yearn, through whom we obtain forgiveness, who would not love thee? Thou art our light in uncertainty, our comfort in sorrow, our solace in the time of trial, our refuge from every peril and temptation. Thou art our sure hope of salvation, second only to thy only-begotten Son; blessed are they who love thee, Our Lady! Incline, I beseech thee, thy ears of pity to the entreaties of this thy servant, a miserable sinner; dissipate the darkness of my sins by the bright beams of thy holiness, in order that I may be acceptable in thy sight. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the devout recitation of this prayer every day for a month (S. P. Ap., April 22, 1941).
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
