We are evaluating old indulgences that have been approve on todays date of:
April
16
List of Traditional materials we will be looking at today, and the current/withstanding grants that they satisfy (directly or indirectly).
152. Receiving, or being present at First Communion
plenary indulgence… Grant 8
NOTE:
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under Grant 15.
Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IV. - “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” – III. First Communion
152. a) The faithful who instruct children for their first Holy Communion for at least half an hour, are granted: An indulgence of 500 days.
b) Those, moreover, who recite the following prayer: O Jesus, who hast loved us with such exceeding great love as to give us the ineffable gift of the Holy Eucharist, inflame us with a burning zeal to promote Thy glory by preparing worthily the little children who are to approach Thy holy table for the first time. Protect, O Sacred Heart of Jesus, these young souls from the assaults of evil, strengthen their faith, increase their love and endow them with all the virtues that will make them worthy to receive Thee. Amen.
Saint John the Baptist, forerunner of the Messias, prepare the way for Jesus in the hearts of these children.
Saint Tarcisius, keep safe the children who are making their first Communion;
may gain: An indulgence of 500 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, Oct. 21, 1908, exhib., Nov. 14, 1908; S. P. Ap., Apr. 16, 1936).
There are indulgences linked to “assisting” in the First Communion of others. This should include instructing communicants. “Assist”ing also can be understood as “attending” the first communion event. As for this prayer, I’m not sure that it counts for this indulgence (which focuses more on actions) but if it doesn't the prayer would at least be covered under Grant 15 (mental prayer) for a partial indulgence.
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who receive Holy Communion for the first time or devoutly assist at the first Holy Communion of others
This concluded the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
