Video - Interview of Fr. Caesar Atuire

"Interview of Father Caesar Atuire, CEO of a Rome-based pilgrimage agency, talks about the practice of obtaining indulgences today." Released 2012.

TRANSCRIPT:

Even after our sins have been pardoned there is some degree of amendment and purification to be made up for the damage that has been done, as a form of reparation. The church has the faculty to sort of like wave this reparation that needs to be done for the damage that has been done to the moral order. [and] The way to obtain an indulgence is very easy, there are certain actions that the church has already prescribed. For example [by] praying the rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament, going to visit certain churches, visiting the major basilicas in Rome, or the cathedrals in certain diocese one can actually have access to these indulgences

Unfortunately the devotion or the importance that's attached to indulgences is actually disappearing in the Catholic Church. We no longer explain these things very well during catechesis and the preparation for sacraments, and most catholics are unaware of these indulgences. [and] I remember talking to somebody from the Apostolic Penitentiary, because the Apostolic Penitentiary is the organ of the Holy See that actually grants these indulgences on special occasions, and they did tell me that the greater number of requests for special indulgences are actually coming from Asia and some of the African countries and we're receiving less from the traditionally Catholic world.
