CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” - V - OUR LADY, QUEEN OF THE PROPHETS
415. A Prayer – To thee, O Queen of Prophets, O Vision of the Prophets, Mother of God and of His people, we have recourse in our necessities, confident that as thou art thyself the fulfilment of prophecy, thou wilt fulfil thine own, and amongst all generations wilt bring N. to call thee blessed. Say to the wanderers for whom we plead, and specially to N., "Thy light is come." One word from thee to thy Son, and the glory of the Lord will arise upon them and the eyes of the blind be opened, so that they, beholding the star, will follow it to the House of Bread; where finding thy Son with thee, they shall eat of the True Bread, and live forever, obtaining joy and gladness while sorrow and mourning shall flee away. O thou who art "prayerfully omnipotent," at whose petition thy Son worked His first miracle, beseech Him to say "I, the Lord, will suddenly do this thing in its time," and grant those for whom we pray, to draw water with joy out of the Saviour's fountains. May we all unite with thee, our Mother, in singing thy "Magnificat" to Him thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth one God, world without end. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Apostolic Brief, Jan. 24, 1901; S. P. Ap., Oct. 13, 1933).
This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. III. “THE INFANT JESUS” – I. Pious Exercises
125. PRAYERS FOR A NOVENA FROM THE 16TH TO THE 24TH DAY OF ANY MONTH – I. Eternal Father, I offer to Thine honor and glory, for my eternal salvation and for the salvation of the whole world, the mystery of the birth of our divine Redeemer. Glory be to the Father, etc.
II. Eternal Father, I offer to Thine honor and glory, for my eternal salvation and for the salvation of the whole world, the sufferings of the most holy Virgin and Saint Joseph on that long and weary journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, and the anguish of their hearts at not finding a place of shelter when the Saviour of the world was about to be born. Glory be to the Father, etc.
III. Eternal Father, I offer to Thine honor and glory, for my eternal salvation and for the salvation of the whole world, the sufferings of Jesus in the manger where He was born, the cold He suffered, the tears He shed and His tender infant cries. Glory be to the Father, etc.
IV. Eternal Father, I offer to Thine honor and glory, for my eternal salvation and for the salvation of the whole world, the pain which the divine Child Jesus felt in His tender Body, when He submitted to the rite of circumcision: I offer Thee that Precious Blood which He then first shed for the salvation of all mankind. Glory be to the Father, etc.
V. Eternal Father, I offer to Thine honor and glory, for my eternal salvation and for the salvation of the whole world, the humility, mortification, patience, charity and all the virtues of the Child Jesus; I thank Thee, I love Thee, and I bless Thee infinitely for this ineffable mystery of the Incarnation of the Word of God. Glory be to the Father, etc.
V. The Word was made flesh;
R. And dwelt amongst us.
Let us pray.
O God, whose only-begotten Son hath appeared in the substance of our flesh; grant, we beseech Thee, that through Him, whom we acknowledge to have been outwardly like unto us, we may deserve to be renewed in our inward selves. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee for ever and ever. Amen.
An indulgence of 7 years once on any day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions at the close of the novena (S. C. Ind., Sept. 23, 1846; S. P. Ap., Oct. 14, 1934).
Although this sequence doesn’t have nine distinct parts, it is titled as a Novena. Assuming that is the case, this devout practice would fall under Grant 22. For an indulgence, novenas need to be said “publicly,” which is generally understood that a parish or diocese or the Church at large set-up/approves a novena to be said by the laity. You cannot do it only on your own or in a group that is not sets/approved by a current ecclesiastic authority. Novenas like these, known as ‘private’ novenas, are notwithstanding for an indulgence. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly assist at public novenas.
CHAPTER IV. “GOD THE HOLY GHOST” – VIII. Prayers
288. O Holy Spirit, Creator, mercifully assist Thy Catholic Church, and by Thy heavenly power strengthen and establish her against the assaults of all her enemies; and by Thy love and grace renew the spirit of Thy servants whom Thou hast anointed, that in Thee they may glorify the Father and His only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., Aug. 26, 1889; S. P. Ap., Oct. 14, 1935).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
