  • Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant ’ 1

  • Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4

  • Some spelling errors may be present.

  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

  • Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. II. ‘IN HONOR OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS’ – IV. Devout Practices

119. The faithful who recite five times the doxology Glory be to the Father together with the ejaculation: Blessed be the most holy Name of Jesus without end! may gain: An indulgence of 300 days (Pius X, Audience Nov. 19, 1906, exhib. Nov. 26, 1906).

Although this indulgence does offer a partial indulgence it does not need to be done exactly as outlined. The ‘Glory be’ and ejaculations may be prayed separately and still offer a partial indulgence each. Every prayer (like these) may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. V. “JESUS CRUCIFIED” – IX. Prayers

209. O my crucified God, behold me at Thy feet; deign to cast me not out, now that I appear before Thee as a sinner. I have offended Thee exceedingly in the past, my Jesus, but it shall be so no longer. Before Thee, my God, I put all my sins..; I have now considered them and behold, they do not deserve Thy pardon; but do Thou cast one glance upon Thy sufferings and see how great is the worth of that Precious Blood that flows from Thy veins. O my God, at this hour close Thine eyes to my want of merit and open them to Thine infinite merit, and since Thou hast been pleased to die for my sins, grant me forgiveness for them all, that I may no longer feel the burden of my sins, for this burden, dear Jesus, oppresses me beyond measure. Assist me, my Jesus, for I desire to become good whatsoever it may cost; take away, destroy, utterly root out all that Thou findest in me contrary to Thy holy will. At the same time I pray Thee, O Jesus, to enlighten me, that I may be able to walk in Thy holy light (Blessed Gemma Galgani). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is recited with devotion every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Feb. 16, 1934 and Nov. 26, 1934).

This prayer offers a partial indulgence under Grant 15 for mental prayer. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

However, this prayer is interesting in that it has a pause to recall one’s sins. This reminds me of Grant 9 regarding examine of consciences, which makes me think this prayer can actually be used under this Grant. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, especially in preparation for sacramental confession, examine their conscience with the purpose of amendment;

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VII. “THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations

224. Sweet Heart of my Jesus, grant that I may ever love Thee more. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, for the daily and devout repetition of this ejaculation (S. C. Ind., Nov. 26, 1876).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VII. “THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations

234. All for Thee, Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. of the Holy Office, Nov. 26. 1908)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 224) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II. “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” - III. Devout Practices

366. The faithful may gain on each of the twelve Saturdays immediately preceding the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the B. V. M., if they devote some time to prayer or meditation in honor of that mystery: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (Holy office, Nov. 26, 1908).

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LV. Saint Margret Mary Alacoque, Virgin

571. A Devout Exercise - The faithful who recite with devotion Glory be to the Father, etc., three times, together with the invocation: “Saint Margaret, pray for me,” before a representation of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, are granted: An indulgence of 300 days; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they perform this act of devotion daily for a month (S. P. Ap., Nov. 26, 1936).

As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
