CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” – V. Prayers

64. O God, Thou who art one in nature and three in persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, first cause and last end of all creatures, the infinite Good, incomprehensible and ineffable, my Creator, my Redeemer, and my Sanctifier, I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, and I love Thee with all my heart.

In the midst of Thine infinite happiness, Thou didst choose me, through no merits of mine, in preference to countless other creatures, who would doubtless have corresponded with Thy blessings better than I have done; Thou didst love me from eternity; and when my hour in time had come, Thou didst draw me from nothingness into earthly existence and didst bestow upon me Thy grace, as a pledge of everlasting life.

From the depths of my misery, I adore Thee and I give Thee thanks. Thy holy Name was invoked over my cradle to be my profession of faith, my plan of action, and the only goal of my earthly pilgrimage; grant, O most Holy Trinity, that I may ever be inspired by this faith, and may carry out this plan with perseverance, so that, when I have reached the end of my journey upon earth, I may be able to fix my gaze upon the blessed splendors of Thy glory.

The faithful, who recite this prayer devoutly on the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, are granted: An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. P. Ap., May 10, 1941)

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IV. - “JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT” – XII. Prayer

185. Throughout the year, O Jesus, thou dost remain humbly hidden within the tabernacle, awaiting, receiving, and hearing the souls who come to Thy feet in search of sympathy and consolation in their sorrows, light and support in the trials of life. Only on this day, leaving Thy silent loneliness, Thou goest forth, passing in triumph and benediction through the streets and squares of the cities in a maze of lights and music, incense and flowers, in the midst of joyous multitudes, who fall down in adoration before Thee. In the synagogue of Capharnaum, the unbelieving throng, rebelling against Thy words of faith and love, deserted Thee; but in the Upper Room that last evening of Thine earthly life, when the dark clouds of betrayal were already settling upon Thy sorrowful soul, Thou didst make Thy divine promise a reality, perpetuating in the institution of the Holy Eucharist, as in a living memorial, the infinite love with which Thy Heart was overflowing towards mankind. By means of this august Sacrament, Thou wouldst prolong Thy presence in the world even to the end of time; and the souls of men, seated at Thy heavenly banquet, were to taste inwardly the sweet irradiations of Thy grace and the ineffable delights of Thy love.

O Jesus, make me feel the overwhelming attraction of Thy silent tabernacle, which has ever drawn not only the little ones, but has always been and will continue to be the joy of pure and great souls. Grant me a living faith and an ardent love for Thee hidden under the sacramental species, so that, frequently drawing near to Thy table where the "Bread of Life"' is set out, I may receive the germ of a life that will not die.

The faithful, who recite this prayer with devotion on the Feast of Corpus Christi, are granted: An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. P. Ap., May 10, 1941).

Althouhgt Grant 7 allows a partial indulgence for prayers to the Blessed Sacrament, the prayers must be duly-approved (which this one is not). So this prayer will be placed under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
