Keep us, O Lord, through the day, by the merits and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all Thy Saints, from all vicious and unruly desires, from all sins and temptations of the devil, and from sudden and unprovided death and the pains of hell. Illuminate my heart with the grace of Thy Holy Spirit; grant that I may ever be obedient to Thy commandments; suffer me not to be separated from Thee, O God, who livest and reignest with God the Father and the same Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen (St. Edmund). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the daily devout repetition of this prayer for a month (S. P. Ap., May 27, 1921 and Mar. 28, 1934).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.

301. Holy Mary, deliver us from the pains of hell. An indulgence of 300 days (Holy Off., Jan. 22, 1914; S. P. Ap., March 28, 1933).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1.. Refer to the above (# 293) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.

305. O Mary, Virgin Mother of God, pray to Jesus for me. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this invocation is devoutly repeated every day for a month (S. P. Ap., April 7, 1921; March 28, 1933)

I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – THE LITTLE OFFICE

318. The faithful who devoutly recite the little Office of the B.V. M. even though bound thereto, may gain: An indulgence of 500 days for each hour of the same Office; An indulgence of 10 years for the entire Office; A plenary indulgence once a month for daily recitation of the entire Office, on the usual conditions (S. C. Ind., Nov. 17, 1887 and Dec, 8, 1897; S.P. March 28, 1935)

This indulgence is maintained under the current Grant 22, which covers Novenas, Litanies, and Little Offices. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who piously recite an approved little office (e.g., of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, or St. Joseph).

P.S. Not only is this Little Office specifically covered in Grant 22, but it should also be covered in Grant 17, regarding prayers that address the Virgin Mary, and also under Grant 21 for prayers on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite. So, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of Marian feast days.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – V. Devout Exercise

325. The faithful who during the month of May take part in public exercises in honor of the B. V. M. may gain: An indulgence of 7 years on any day of the month; A plenary indulgence if they assist at the exercises on at least ten days, and moreover go to confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the Holy Father's intention.

Those who perform their devotions privately during the aforesaid month are granted: An indulgence of 5 years once on any day of the month; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if they perform these devotions every day during the month; but where public exercises are held, this indulgence is granted only to those who are lawfully hindered from taking part in the same (Secret Mem. March 21, 1815; S. C. Ind., June 18. 1822: S. P. Ap., March 28, 1933).

As with most Exercises and Practices, this traditional indulgence is Notwithstanding. However, due to the nature of some of the General Grants there may be opportunity to use this traditional grant in a way that satisfies a current grant. For example:

G2) A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who led by the spirit of faith, give compassionately of themselves or of their goods to serve their brothers in need.

G3)A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, in a spirit of penance, voluntarily abstain from something that is licit for and pleasing to them.

G4) A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, in the particular circumstances of daily life, voluntarily give explicit witness to their faith before others.

Alms giving, and other types of giving may be considered an act of devotion. Abstaining may be considered an act of devotion. And lastly, you guessed it, witnessing one’s faith before others may be considered an act of devotion. Therefore, if you would like to personally link up 1) a habit of giving, 2) a period of abstinence, or 3) preforming an action of faith before another – with the sentiment of devotion to the B.V.M, in the month of May.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers

343. O holy Mary, my Mistress, into thy blessed trust and special keeping, into the bosom of thy tender mercy, this day, every day of my life and at the hour of my death, I commend my soul and body; to thee I entrust all my hopes and consolations, all my trials and miseries, my life and the end of my life, that through thy most holy intercession and thy merits, all my actions may be ordered and disposed according to thy will and that of thy divine Son. Amen (St. Aloysius Gonzaga). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions, if this prayer is recited daily (S. C. Ind., Mar. 15, 1890; S. P. Ap., Mar. 28, 1933).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers

345. Majestic Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels, thou didst receive from God the power and commission to crush the head of Satan; wherefore we humbly beseech thee, send forth the legions of heaven, that, under thy command, they may seek out all evil spirits, engage them everywhere in battle, curb their insolence, and hurl them back into the pit of hell. "Who is like unto God?"

O good and tender Mother, thou shalt ever be our hope and the object of our love.

O Mother of God, send forth the holy Angels to defend me and drive far from me the cruel foe.

Holy Angels and Archangels, defend us and keep us. An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., July 8, 1908; S. P. Ap., March 28, 1935)

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.”- VII. Prayers

478. Glorious Saint Joseph, pattern of all who are devoted to toil, obtain for me the grace to toil in the spirit of penance, in order thereby to atone for my many sins; to toil conscientiously, putting devotion to duty before my own inclinations; to labor with thankfulness and joy, deeming it an honor to employ and to develop, by my labor, the gifts I have received from Almighty God; to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, without ever shrinking from weariness and difficulties; to work above all with a pure intention and with detachment from self, having always before my eyes the hour of death and the accounting which I must then render of time ill-spent, of talents unemployed, of good undone, and of my empty pride in success, which is so fatal to the work of God. All for Jesus, all through Mary, all in imitation of thee, O Patriarch Joseph! This shall be my motto in life and in death. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Pius X, Rescript in his own hand, Nov. 23, 1906, exhib. March 15, 1907; S. P. Ap., March 28, 1933)

A partial indulgence is available through Grant 19, prayers in honor of St. Joseph. This grant says that a prayer must be ‘duly approved,’ which it is. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who invoke St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a duly approved prayer.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. VII. “MISCELLANEOUS DEVOTIONS” – XLIV. In the time of trial

721. An Invocation- I deserve to suffer these things, O Lord, for I have sinned! The faithful who devoutly make this act of humility in their trials and tribulations, whether spiritual or temporal, are granted: An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Mar. 28, 1941).

This concluded the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
