CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. VIII. “JESUS CHRIST THE KING” – III. Act of Dedication of the Human Race

271. Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before Thine Altar (outside a church or oratory say: in Thy presence). We are Thine, and Thine we wish to be; but to be more surely united to Thee, behold, each one of us this day freely dedicates himself to Thy Most Sacred Heart. Many, indeed, have never known Thee; many, too, despising Thy precepts have rejected Thee. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart. Be thou King, O Lord not only of the faithful who have never forsaken Thee, but also of the prodigal sons who have abandoned Thee; grant that they may quickly return to their Father's house, lest they perish of wretchedness and hunger. Be Thou King of those whom heresy holds in error or discord keeps aloof; call them back to the harbor of truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one fold and one Shepherd. Be Thou King of all those who even now sit in the shadow of idolatry or Islam, and refuse not Thou to bring them into the light of Thy kingdom. Look, finally, with eyes of pity upon the children of that race, which was for so long a time Thy chosen people; and let Thy Blood, which was once invoked upon them in vengeance, now descend upon them also in a cleansing flood of redemption and eternal life. Grant, O Lord, to Thy Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; unto all nations give an ordered tranquillity; bring it to pass that from pole to pole the earth may resound with one cry: Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to It be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. An indulgence of 5 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on condition of confession, Communion and a visit to a church or public oratory for the daily recitation of this prayer (S. P. Ap., July 16, 1926).

The faithful who on the Feast of our Lord Jesus Christ the King take part in an act of dedication of the human race to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, according to the above formula (See also the Encyclical Letter of Pius XI, "Quas primas", Dec. 11, 1925), in any church, public or semi-public oratory (if they may lawfully use the latter), and in addition recite the Litany of the Sacred Heart in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament solemnly exposed, may gain: An indulgence of 7 years; A plenary indulgence on condition of confession and Holy Communion (S. P. Ap., Feb. 15, 1927 and March 18, 1932).

This prayer is called Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer or “Iesu dulcissime, Redemptor” in latin. Under Grant 2 this prayer is specifically used on the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. So this prayer can be found in the ‘Manuel of Indulgences.’ The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, publicly recite the act of dedication of the human race to Christ the King (Iesu dulcissime, Redemptor); a partial indulgence is granted for its use in other circumstances.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IX. THE HOLY FAMILY – I. Invocations

274. The faithful who devoutly invoke the sacred names of Jesus, Mary and Joseph conjointly, may gain: An indulgence of 7 years; A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily repetition of the invocation (Pius X, Rescript, in his own hand, June 8, 1906, exhibited June 16, 1906; S. P. Ap., March 18, 1932). NOTE: For invocations for a happy death, see n. 636.

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER IV. “GOD THE HOLY GHOST” – V. Chaplet

286. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

An Act of Contrition: O my God, I am sorry that I have sinned against Thee, because Thou art so good; with the help of Thy grace, I will sin no more.

The hymn, "Come, Holy Ghost," etc., with the versicles and prayer as above, n. 283. ((can be found in the Traditional Indulgence post for Feb. 9))

I - FIRST MYSTERY - Jesus is conceived by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary – Meditation. - The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee. Therefore also the Holy One which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God (Luke 1, 35). - Application. - Pray earnestly for the assistance of the Spirit of God and the intercession of Mary to imitate the virtues of Jesus Christ who is the pattern of every virtue, in order that you may be conformed to the image of the Son of God.

Our Father and Hail Mary once; Glory be seven times.

II - SECOND MYSTERY - The Spirit of the Lord rests upon Jesus - Meditation. - Now Jesus being baptized went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened unto Him; and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him (Matt. 3, 16). - Application. - Hold in highest esteem the precious gift of sanctifying grace which was infused into your heart in Baptism by the Holy Spirit. Keep the promises to whose observance you then bound yourself. By continual exercise increase your faith, your hope and your charity. Ever live as becomes a child of God and a member of the true Church of God, so that after this life you may receive heaven as your inheritance.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory be seven times.

III - THIRD MYSTERY - Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert - Meditation. - And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from the Jordan: and was led by the Spirit into the desert for the space of forty days, and was tempted by the devil (Luke 4: 1, 2). - Application. - Be ever thankful for the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit given to you in Confirmation, for the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and fortitude, of knowledge and piety, and of the fear of the Lord. Faithfully obey your divine Guide, so that you may act manfully in all the perils of this life and in all temptations, as becomes a perfect Christian and a strong athlete of Jesus Christ.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory be seven times.

IV - FOURTH MYSTERY - The Holy Spirit in the Church - Meditation. - And suddenly there came from Heaven a sound as of a mighty wind coming, where they were sitting; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, speaking the wonderful works of God (Acts 2: 2, 4, 11). - Application. - Give thanks to God that He has made you a child of His Church which is always quickened and governed by His divine Spirit, who was sent into the world on the day of Pentecost. Hear and follow the sovereign Pontiff who teaches infallibly through the Holy Spirit, and the Church which is the pillar and ground of truth. Hold fast her doctrines, maintain her cause, defend her rights.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory be seven times.

V - FIFTH MYSTERY - The Holy Spirit in the souls of the righteous – Meditation. — Know ye not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost who is in you? (1 Cor. 6, 19). Extinguish not the Spirit (1 Thess. 5, 19). And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, in whom ye are sealed unto the day of redemption (Eph. 4, 30). - Application. - Be ever mindful of the Holy Spirit who is in you, and make every effort to be pure in mind and body. Faithfully obey His divine inspirations, that you may bring forth the fruits of the Spirit: which are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, meekness, faith, moderation, continence and chastity.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory be seven times.

At the end say the Apostles' Creed: I believe in God, etc., as above under n. 43.

An indulgence of 7 years. A plenary indulgence one month on the usual conditions for the daily devout repetition of this chaplet (Apostolic Brief, Match 24, 1902; S. P. Ap., March 18, 1932).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

P.S. Fun fact, chaplets are generally designed to be prayed alongside an average 5-decade rosary. (that is they usually have corresponding prayers for the beads of the rosary). I mention this because rosaries are considered articles of devotions and can offer a partial indulgence when they are properly blessed and then they are used. It does not specify how these articles of devotion have to be used, so praying chaplets with rosaries should offer a partial indulgence as well. (And a plenary indulgence on June 29)

P.S. Grant 30 allows that the reading of Sacred Scripture (under 30 mins) offers a partial indulgence. The portions of scripture mentioned within this Chaplet could possibly offer the extra benefit of a partial indulgence under this Grant.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers

348. Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, unto us Thy servants, that we may rejoice in continual health of mind and body; and, by the glorious intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin, may be delivered from present sadness, and enter into the joy of Thine eternal gladness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Roman Missal). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily repetition of this prayer (S. P. Ap., March 18, 1935).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II. “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” - II. THE LITTLE OFFICE

360. The faithful, who recite with devotion the little Office of the Immaculate Conception of the B. V. M., may obtain: An indulgence of 7 years; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions if they recite the same daily for a month (Apostolic Brief, March 31, 1876; S. P. Ap., Oct. 23, 1928 and March 18, 1932).

This indulgence is maintained under the current Grant 22, which covers Novenas, Litanies, and Little Offices. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who piously recite an approved little office (e.g., of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, or St. Joseph).

P.S. Not only is this Little Office specifically covered in Grant 22, but it should also be covered in Grant 17, regarding prayers that address the Virgin Mary, and also under Grant 21 for prayers on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite. So, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II. “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” - III. Devout Practices

362. The faithful, who recite with devotion the prayers entitled: “A devout seven days’ supplication to the most holy Virgin Mother of God, immaculately conceived, for obtaining the grace of a godly life in Christ, and a happy death in the peace of the Lord, taken from the writings of the Seraphic Doctor, St. Bonaventure," may gain: An indulgence of 7 years once a day. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the B. V. M. and on one day during the Octave, on the Feast of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Virgin Mother of God, on the Feast of St. Bonaventure, and once during the month of May, if this devout service is preformed daily throughout an entire month immediately preceding the above-mentioned feasts and days (Apostolic Brief, Dec. 9, 1856; 5. P. Ap., March 18, 1932)

So, because this traditional indulgence does not include the prayers it is referencing, it is Notwithstanding as a whole. Prayers may be said in Honor of Mary (Grant 17) and in Honor of saints upon their feast days (Grant 21), so this indulgence may be revitalized.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. III. THE BLESSED VIRGIN SORROWING - III. Devout Exercise

382. The faithful who, on any of the seven Fridays which immediately precede either Feast of the Sorrows of the B. V. M. recite seven times the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be, may gain: An indulgence of 7 years; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (Apostolic Brief, March 22, 1918; S. P. Ap., March 18, 1932).

This Traditional indulgence is Notwithstanding as a whole. But it may be used in different ways, such as under Grant 15 (mental prayers for personal edification) or under the General Grants, such as GG 2, 3, or 4.

This concluded the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
