Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - II. ACTS OF THE THEOLOGICAL VIRTUES AND OF CONTRITION
40. I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee, I adore Thee, O Blessed Trinity, one God; have mercy on me now and at the hour of my death and save me. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., June 2, 1921)
Acts of Theological Virtues are covered under the current grant, Grant 28. With this being such a short prayer, I would normally suspect this to be an invocation of some sort, but the Raccolta does not label it as such, so I have no other reason to think it wouldn’t fulfill this current grant. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who recite an Act of Faith, Hope, and Charity in any legitimate formula.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. IV. “THE MOST PURE HEART OF MARY” - II. Devout Exercise
389. The faithful who offer prayers or other acts of piety in honor of the immaculate Heart of Mary, on any day during the month of August, may gain: An indulgence of 5 years, once.
Those who persevere in such a devout exercise daily throughout the month of August, may gain: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. C. Holy Off., March 13, 1913; S. P. Ap., June 2, 1935).
As we have established: most exercises or practices do not directly correlate to a current indulgence grant, but they could be expressed under other grants that are more generalized. Like General Grants 2, 3, or 4, which offer partial indulgences for giving to those in need, abstaining, and/or witnessing to the faith.
CHAPTER VI. “THE HOLY ANGELS” – Art. III. “SAINT GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL”
448. The faithful who devoutly recite some prayers in honor of St. Gabriel the Archangel at any season of the year, with the intention of continuing the same for nine successive days, may gain: An indulgence of 5 years once each day; A plenary indulgence, on the usual conditions, at the end of the novena (Pius IX, Audience, Jan. 3, 1849; S. C. Bishops and Religious, Jan. 28, 1850; S. C. Ind., Nov. 26, 1876; S. P. Ap., June 2, 1933)
This devout practice would fall under Grant 22, for novenas. For an indulgence, novenas need to be said “publicly,” which is generally understood that a parish or diocese or the Church at large set-up/approves a novena to be said by the laity. You cannot do it only on your own or in a group that is not sets/approved by a current ecclesiastic authority. Novenas like these, known as ‘private’ novenas, are notwithstanding for an indulgence.
The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly assist at public novenas.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XXXI. SAINT DOMINIC, CONFESSOR
542. I. O glorious Saint Dominic, thou who wast a model of mortification and purity, by punishing thy innocent body with scourges, with fasting and with watchings, and by keeping inviolate the lily of thy virginity, obtain for us the grace to practice penance with a generous heart and to keep unspotted the purity of our bodies and our hearts. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
II. O great Saint, who, inflamed with divine love, didst find thy delight in prayer and intimate union with God; obtain for us to be faithful in our daily prayers, to love Our Lord ardently, and to observe His commandments with ever increasing fidelity. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
III. O glorious Saint Dominic, who, being filled with zeal for the salvation of souls, didst preach the Gospel in season and out of season and didst establish the Order of Friars Preachers to labor for the conversion of heretics and poor sinners, pray thou to God for us, that He may grant us to love all our brethren sincerely and to cooperate always, by our prayers and good works, in their sanctification and eternal salvation. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.
V. Pray for us, Saint Dominic,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray.
Grant, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, that we who are weighed down by the burden of our sins may be raised up by the patronage of blessed Dominic Thy Confessor. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgences on the usual conditions, when these prayers together with versicle and prayer have been recited daily for a month (S. C. Ind., July 21, 1883; S. P. Ap., Mar. 16, 1934 and June 2, 1949)
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
