Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4
Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations
27. From all sin deliver me, O Lord. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this invocation is devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., June 11, 1939).
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – Art. IV. For the Conversion of Non-Catholics – III. Prayers
627. O Virgin immaculate, thou who by a singular privilege of grace wast preserved from original sin, look in pity upon our separated brethren, who are nevertheless thy children, and call them back to the center of unity. Not a few of them, although separated from the Church, have kept a certain veneration for thee; and do thou, generous as thou art, reward them for it, by obtaining for them the grace of conversion.
Thou wast conqueror of the infernal serpent from the first instant of thy existence; renew even now, for it is now more necessary than ever before, thine ancient triumphs; glorify thy divine Son, bring back to Him the sheep that have strayed from the one fold and place them once more under the guidance of the universal Shepherd who holds the place of thy Son on earth; let it be thy glory, O Virgin who destroyest all heresies, to restore unity and peace once more to all the Christian people.
An Indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, on the Feasts of the Immaculate Conception, the Nativity, the Annunciation, the Purification, and the Assumption of the B. V. M., if this prayer is recited with devotion.
A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the daily devout recitation of the prayer throughout an enter month (S. C. Ind., Feb. 1, 1896; S. P. Ap., Feb. 15, 1935 and June 11, 1938).
Due to this prayer mentioning the desire of unity, this prayer is covered under Grant 11. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly recite an appropriately approved prayer for the unity of Christians
It also expressly mentions the Blessed Virgin, so it could also fall under Grant 17. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
