  • Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. IX. THE HOLY FAMILY – Responsory Prayers

275. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace of loving Holy Church, as we are bound to do, above every earthly thing, and of ever showing forth our love by the witness of our deeds. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace of openly professing, as we are bound to do, with courage and without human respect, the faith that we received of Thy gift in holy Baptism. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace of sharing, as we are bound to do, in the defense and propagation of the Faith, when duty calls, whether by word or by the sacrifice of our fortunes and our lives. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace of loving one another in mutual charity, as we are bound to do, and establish us in perfect harmony of thought, will and action, under the rule and guidance of our holy Pastors. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, bless us and grant us the grace of conforming our lives fully, as we are bound to do, to the commandments of God's law and that of His holy Church, so as to live always in that charity which they set forth. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

An indulgence of 3 years (S. C. Ind., May 17, 1890; S. P. Ap., July 27, 1935).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

P.S. There are current indulgences for approved prayers to Mary and duly approved prayers to Joseph. They are also partial indulgences.

CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” - Art. II. “FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE” – I. Invocations

605. O Lord, grant unto Thy Church saintly priests and fervent religious. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., July 27, 1923).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

P.S. Under Grant 5, a partial indulgence is available for those who pray for the intentions of ‘DAYS DESIGNATED UNIVERSALLY FOR A CERTAIN RELIGIOUS INTENTION.’ There is a day dedicated to the sanctification of priests.Prayers for universal intentions do not need to be approved, nor (as far as I know) do they have to be said only on that universally designated day. So, this invocation should be good, when said with other prayers, for a partial indulgence under Grant 5.

CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations

72. Jesus, my God, I love Thee above all things. An indulgence of 300 days (Pius IX, Rescript in his own hand, May 7, 1854; S. P. Ap., July 28, 1932)

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. VII. “THE BLESSED VIRGIN UNDER DIVERS TITLES” – IV. OUR LADY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS

414. A Prayer - O Mary, powerful Virgin, thou art the mighty and glorious protector of the Church; thou art the marvelous help of Christians; thou art terrible as an army in battle array; thou alone hast destroyed every heresy in the whole world. In the midst of our anguish, our struggles and our distress defend us from the power of the enemy and at the hour of our death receive our souls in paradise. Amen (St. John Bosco). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this prayer has been devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Feb. 20, 1923 and July 29, 1933).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

P.S. Prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite, according to Grant 21. This would offer the opportunity for a partial indulgence. Prayers for this Grant must be “approved by legitimate authority.” Therefore, this prayer would be a valid option in honor of the Marian feast: the Feast Day of OUR LADY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
