Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4
Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.” - IV. Hymns
463. Te loseph celebrent agmina caelitum – Joseph! to thee by host on high And choir of Christians, laud be paid! - Saintly of life, — by purest tie Joined unto her, the glorious Maid.
When thou didst doubt thy wife's repute, And mark her great with motherhood, The angel taught thee that her fruit Came from the Holy Ghost of God.
To clasp the Son, thy Lord, was thine, - To share His flight to Egypt's shore, - With tears, to seek in Salem's shrine Him lost, - with joy, to find once more.
Death brings to other Saints their rest; Through toil they win the victor's place; - Thou happier, like the Angels blest, Alive, hast seen God face to face.
Spare us, O Trinity most High! Grant that, with Joseph, we may gain Thy starry realm, and ceaselessly There raise to Thee our thankful strain. Amen (Roman Breviary, tr. R. F. Littledale).
An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, for the daily recitation of this hymn for a month (S. P. Ap., Feb. 9, 1922 and July 13, 1932)
A partial indulgence is available through Grant 19, prayers in honor of St. Joseph. This grant says that a prayer must be ‘duly approved,’ which it is. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who invoke St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a duly approved prayer.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” – III. PRAYERS TO BE SAID BY CLERICS IN HOLY ORDERS AND BY PRIESTS - (B) FOR THE DUE FULFILLMENT OF THEIR SACRED DUITES
738. A Prayer for the grace of preaching holily and fruitfully - Give me, O Lord, a mild and judicious eloquence which shall keep me from being puffed up and exalted above my brethren by reason of Thy gifts. Put into my mouth, I beseech Thee, words of consolation and edification and exhortation through Thy Holy Spirit, that I may be enabled to exhort the good to better things, and, by word and example, to recall to the straight way of Thy righteousness those who walk perversely. Let the words which Thou shalt give Thy servant, be like to sharp javelins and burning arrows that shall pierce and enkindle unto Thy fear and holy love the minds of all them that hear me. Amen (St. Anselm, Bishop, Confessor and Doctor). An indulgence of 500 days, if this prayer is said before preaching the Word of God (S. C. Ind., July 12, 1907; S. P. Ap., July 13, 1934).
There is no current indulgence for ‘prayers to be said by a priest.’ Even though it would be the most appropriate that this prayer is said by a priest, this prayer is treated like any other non-specific prayer… Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
