CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

19. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit (Psalm 30, 6). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when the invocation has been devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Jan. 20, 1932)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1 The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows:§1  A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who read the Sacred Scriptures as spiritual reading, from a text approved by competent authority and with the reverence due to the divine word, for at least a half an hour; if the time is less, the indulgence will be partial. §2  If for some good reason a person is unable to read the Sacred Scriptures, a plenary or partial indulgence is granted, as above, if the text of Sacred Scripture is listened to while another person is reading or if it is heard by means of a video or audio recording.

93. Lord, Jesus,

Through Thine infant cries when Thou wast born for me in the manger,

Through Thy tears when Thou didst die for me on the Cross,

Through Thy love as Thou livest for me in the tabernacle,

Have mercy on me and save me.

CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. II. “IN HONOR OF SAINT JOSEPH, SPOUCE OF THE B. V. M.” - VII. Prayers

472. Remember, O most pure Spouse of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, my beloved patron, that never hath it been heard that any one invoked thy patronage and sought thine aid without being comforted. Inspired by this confidence, I come to thee and fervently commend myself to thee. Ah, despise not my petition, dear foster-father of our Redeemer, but accept it graciously. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Apostolic Brief, June 26, 1863; S. P. Ap., Jan. 20, 1933)

517. A Prayer - O glorious Saint Francis, who, even in thy youth, with a generous heart didst renounce the comfort and ease of thy father's house in order to follow Jesus more closely in His humility and poverty, in His mortification and passionate love of the Cross, and didst thereby merit to behold the miraculous Stigmata impressed upon thy flesh and to bear them about with thee, obtain for us also, we pray, the grace of passing through our life here below, as though insensible to the ephemeral splendor of all earthly possessions, with our hearts constantly beating with love of Jesus Crucified even in the darkest and saddest hours of life and with our eyes ever serenely raised toward heaven, as though already enjoying a foretaste of the eternal possession of the infinite Good with His divine and everlasting joys. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is devoutly recited every day for a month (S. P. Ap., Jan. 20, 1941).

518. A Prayer - Lord Jesus Christ, who, when the world was growing cold, didst renew in the flesh of blessed Francis the sacred marks of Thy Passion in order to inflame our hearts with the fire of Thy love; mercifully grant that, by his merits and prayers, we may always carry the cross and bring forth fruits worthy of repentance: Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if the daily recitation of this prayer is continued for a month (S. P. Ap., Jan. 20, 1941)

CHAPTER VII. “THE SAINTS” - Art. IV. “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XVIII. Saint Vincent Ferrer, Confessor

522. A Prayer - O glorious Apostle and wonder-worker, Saint Vincent Ferrer, new Angel of the Apocalypse and our loving patron, receive our humble prayer, and send down upon us a plentiful shower of divine favors. By the fire of love in thy heart, obtain for us from the Father of mercies the pardon and remission of all our sins, steadfastness in faith, and perseverance in good works, that so we may live as good and fervent Christians and become worthy of thy powerful patronage. Extend thy protection to our bodies also, and deliver us from sickness. Keep our fields from hurtful tempests and storms of hail, and banish all misfortune far from us. Blessed by thy favors both in body and soul, we shall ever be thy devoted clients, and one day we shall come to heaven to join with thee in praising God through all eternity. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days (S. C. Ind., Sept. 17, 1887; S. P. Ap., Jan. 20, 1931).

This concluded the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
