Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
The full written outline of the requirements for a partial or plenary indulgence, found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice, may be omitted if not all of the information is unique or notable. (You will see three dots when there is a break in text …)
CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations
15. O God, Thou art all-powerful, make me a saint (St. Alphonsus M. de' Liguori). An indulgence of 500 days (Apostolic Brief, Jan. 26, 1924; S. P. Ap., Feb. 12, 1934)
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.
317. O Mary, may thy children persevere in loving thee! An indulgence of 300 days (Pius XI, Rescr. in his own hand, May 9, 1922, exhib. Feb. 12, 1943). NOTE: An invocation to the Blessed Virgin Mary for obtaining the grace of continence is found under n. 713.
Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’. Refer to the above (# 15) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” - XVII. SAINT ALPHONSUS M. DE' LIGUORI, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR
521. A Prayer – O my glorious and well-beloved patron, Saint Alphonsus, thou who didst toil and suffer so abundantly to assure to men the fruits of the Redemption, behold the miseries of my poor soul and have pity on me. By thy powerful intercession with Jesus and Mary, obtain for me true repentance for my sins together with their pardon and remission, a deep hatred of sin and strength evermore to resist all temptations. Share with me, I pray, at least a spark of that fire of love wherewith thy heart did ever burn; and grant that, following thy example, I may make the will of God the only rule of my life. Obtain for me likewise a fervent at and lasting love of Jesus, and a tender and childlike devotion to Mary, together with the grace to pray without ceasing and to persevere in the service of God even to the end of my life, that so I may finally be united with thee in praising God and most holy Mary through all eternity. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said devoutly every day for a month (S. C. Ind., June 18, 1887; S. P. Ap., Feb. 12, 1933)
Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – L. SAINT TERESA, VIRGIN
565. A Prayer - O Saint Teresa, seraphic Virgin, beloved spouse of thy crucified Lord, thou who on earth didst burn with a love so intense toward thy God and my God, and now dost glow with a brighter and purer flame in paradise: obtain for me also, I beseech thee, a spark of that same holy fire which shall cause me to forget the world, all things created, and even myself; for thou didst ever greatly desire to see Him loved by all men. Grant that my every thought and desire and affection may be continually employed in doing the will of God, the supreme Good, whether I am in joy or in pain, for He is worthy to be loved and obeyed everlastingly. Obtain for me this grace, thou who art so powerful with God; may I be all on fire, like thee, with the holy love of God. Amen (St. Alphonsus M. de' Liguori). An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this prayer is said devoutly every day for a month (S. C. Ind., April 22, 1898 and S. P. Ap., Feb. 12, 1934).
Refer to the above (# 521) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding prayers in honor of the saints
This concluded the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
