CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

1. To the King of ages, immortal and invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen (Roman Breviary). An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this ejaculation is recited devoutly every day for a month (S. P. Ap., June 7, 1921 and Dec. 9, 1932)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

4. May the most just, the most high and the most lovable will of God be in all things done, praised and evermore exalted. An indulgence of 500 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if the daily devout recitation of this ejaculation is continued for a month. A plenary indulgence at the hour of death, to be gained by those who have often recited it during life and who, after confession and Communion or at least an act of contrition, shall invoke the Name of Jesus, orally if possible, or at least in their heart, and accept death from the hand of the Lord with resignation as being the wages of sin (S. C. Ind., May 19, 1818; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1932)

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 1) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

8. Blessed be the Name of the Lord! An indulgence of 500 days, as often as this ejaculation is devoutly recited upon hearing blasphemies against God (S. C. Ind., Nov. 28, 1903; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1932).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 1) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

P.S. Due to the instruction to respond to blasphemies with this ejaculation, this also may apply under General Grant 4, for witnessing to the faith.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations

16. a) Holy God, Holy Strong One, Holy Immoral One, have mercy on us.

b) To Thee be praise, to Thee be glory, to Thee be thanksgiving through endless ages, O Blessed Trinity (Roman Missal).

An indulgence of 500 days for each invocation even when recited separately. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if either ejaculation is recited daily with devotion for an entire month (Apostolic Brief, Feb. 13, 1924; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1932

I have mentioned before that I don’t know what the difference between an invocation and an ejaculation is. Due to descriptions like this, I do believe now that confusion is a natural reaction. This traditional indulgence refers to these as both invocations and ejaculations (and, for some other indulgences, they are referred to as prayers too.) Luckily, weather something is an invocation, ejaculation, or (mental) prayer, they all a partial indulgence. Therefor, even though there may be some confusion on correct categories, the results are the same.

Therefore, I have no issue in placing this traditional indulgence under ‘General Grant’ 1 for invocations. Refer to the above (# 1) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - III. Acts of Adoration and Thanksgiving

45. Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, behold us prostrate in Thy divine presence. We humble ourselves profoundly and beg of Thee the forgiveness of our sins.

I. We adore Thee, Almighty Father, and with hearts overflowing we thank Thee that Thou hast given us Thy divine Son Jesus to be our Redeemer, and that He hath bequeathed Himself to us in the most august Eucharist even to the end of the world, revealing unto us the wondrous love of His Heart in this mystery of faith and love. Glory be to the Father, etc.

II. O Word of God, dear Jesus our Redeemer, we adore Thee and with hearts overflowing we thank Thee for having taken human flesh upon Thee and become for our redemption both Priest and Victim in the sacrifice of the Cross, a sacrifice which, through the exceeding love of Thy Sacred Heart, Thou dost renew upon our altars at every moment. O High Priest, O divine Victim, give us the grace to honor Thy holy sacrifice in the most adorable Eucharist with the homage of Mary most holy and of all Thy holy Church, triumphant, suffering and militant. We offer ourselves wholly to Thee; of Thine infinite goodness and mercy do Thou accept our offering, unite it to Thine own and grant us Thy blessing. Glory be to the Father, etc.

III. O Divine Spirit the Paraclete, we adore Thee and with hearts overflowing we give Thee thanks that Thou hast, with such great love for us, wrought the ineffable blessing of the Incarnation of the Word of God, a blessing which is being continually extended and enlarged in the most august Sacrament of the Eucharist. Ah, by this adorable mystery of the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, do Thou grant unto us and all poor sinners Thy holy grace. Pour forth Thy holy gifts upon us and upon all redeemed souls, and in an especial manner upon the visible Head of the Church, the supreme Roman Pontiff, upon all Cardinals, Bishops and Pastors of souls, upon priests and all other ministers of Thy sanctuary. Amen. Glory be to the Father, etc. An indulgence of 3 years (S. C. Ind., Mar. 22, 1905; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1932).

Under Grant 26, Acts of Thanksgiving may offer a partial indulgence. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, 1° at the beginning and the end of the day, 2° in starting and completing their work, 3° before and after meals, devoutly offer some legitimately approved prayer of supplication and act of thanksgiving (e.g...)

P.S. Due to the mention of ecclesial authorities (Pastors) this prayer could also qualify under Grant 25. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who 1° in a spirit of filial devotion, devoutly recite any duly approved prayer for the Supreme Pontiff (e.g., the Oremus pro Pontifice); 2° similarly, devoutly recite a prayer taken from the Missal for the bishop of an eparchy or diocese on the occasion of the beginning of his pastoral ministry or on its anniversary.

CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” – V. Prayers

50. Of Thy tender mercy, we beseech Thee, O Lord, loose the bonds of our sins, and through the intercession of Mary, the blessed and ever-Virgin Mother of God, together with that of Saint Joseph and Thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all Thy Saints, keep us Thy servants and our dwelling places in all holiness; cleanse from sin and endue with virtue all those who are joined to us by kindred, affinity and friendship; grant unto us peace and safety; remove far from us our enemies, both visible and invisible; repress all our carnal desires; grant us wholesome air; bestow Thy charity upon our friends and enemies; guard Thy city; preserve our Pontiff N.; defend all prelates and princes and Thine entire Christian people from every adversity. Let Thy blessing be evermore upon us, and do Thou grant unto all the faithful departed rest everlasting. Amen. An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, provided that the devout recitation of this prayer be continued daily for a month (Leo XII, Rescript in his own hand, July 9, 1828; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1932).

This traditional prayer addresses many intentions that are still relevant under current indulgences. Prating with Mary and Joseph, for the Pope, and for various universal intentions could make this prayer applicable (for a partial indulgence in most cases) under many Grants. With that said, Grant 15 for mental prayer would be a good cover-all category.

CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations

87. O Jesus, grant that I may be Thine, wholly Thine, forever Thine. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1936).

Every invocation may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. Refer to the above (# 1) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding invocations.

CHAPTER III. ‘GOD THE SON’ – Art. II. ‘IN HONOR OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS’ – I. Invocation

113. The faithful who devoutly invoke the holy Name of Jesus may gain: An indulgence of 300 days; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when they repeat this invocation daily for a month; A plenary indulgence at the hour of death, if they have been accustomed to invoke the holy Name frequently during life, provided that, after confession and Communion, or at least an act of contrition, they devoutly invoke the holy Name of Jesus with their lips if possible, otherwise in their hearts, and accept death with resignation from the hand of God as the wages of sin (S. C. Ind Sept. 5, 1759 and Oct. 10, 1904; S. P. Ap., Dec. 9, 1933).

This invocation: “Jesus,” is eligible for a partial indulgence, if applied correctly, under ‘General Grant’ 1. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while carrying out their duties and enduring the hardships of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
