CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” – V. Prayers

52. Receive, O Lord, all my liberty. Take my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. Whatsoever I have or hold, Thou hast given me; I give it all back to Thee and commit it wholly to be governed by Thy will. Thy love and Thy grace give unto me, and I am rich enough and ask for nothing more (St. Ignatius Loyola). An indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this act of oblation is made daily with a devout spirit for an entire month (S. Ci. Ind., May 26, 1883; S. P. Ap., Dec. 4, 1932).

Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” - IV. AN ACT OF REPARATION

329. PRAYER IN REPARATION FOR INSULTS OFFERED TO THE B. V. M. - O blessed Virgin, Mother of God, look down in mercy from Heaven, where thou art enthroned as Queen, upon me, a miserable sinner, thine unworthy servant. Although I know full well my own unworthiness, yet in order to atone for the offenses that are done to thee by impious and blasphemous tongues, from the depths of my heart I praise and extol thee as the purest, the fairest, the holiest creature of all God's handiwork. I bless thy holy Name, I praise thine exalted privilege of being truly Mother of God, ever Virgin, conceived without stain of sin, Co-Redemptrix of the human race. I bless the Eternal Father who chose thee in an especial way for His daughter; I bless the Word Incarnate who took upon Himself our nature in thy bosom and so made thee His Mother; I bless the Holy Spirit who took thee as His bride. All honor, praise and thanksgiving to the ever-blessed Trinity who predestined thee and loved thee so exceedingly from all eternity as to exalt thee above all creatures to the most sublime heights. O Virgin, holy and merciful, obtain for all who offend thee the grace of repentance, and graciously accept this poor act of homage from me thy servant, obtaining likewise for me from thy divine Son the pardon and remission of all my sins. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Holy Office, Jan. 22, 1914; S. P. Ap., Dec. 4, 1934).

This prayer is granted a partial indulgence under Grant 17, because it has been “approved” at least once. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – VI. SAINT STANISLAUS KOSTKA, CONFESSOR

502. Prayer - Saint Stanislaus, my patron most chaste, Angel of purity, I rejoice with thee in that singular gift of virginal purity which graced thy spotless heart; and I humbly beseech thee, obtain for me the strength to overcome temptations to impurity, and inspire me to continual vigilance in keeping intact the virtue of holy purity. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Saint Stanislaus, my patron most loving, Seraph of charity, I rejoice with thee in the glowing flame of love that kept thy pure and sinless heart always at peace and united to thy God: I humbly beseech thee to obtain for me such a flame of divine love as shall consume every affection for things of earth, and set me on fire with heavenly love alone. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

Saint Stanislaus, my patron most tender and most powerful, Angel of purity and Seraph of love, I rejoice with thee in thy happy death, a death caused by thy longing to see Mary who was taken up bodily into heaven, and consummated by a mighty impulse of love toward her. I give thanks unto Mary who was pleased to hear and answer thy prayers, and I implore thee, by the glory of that thy happy death, to be the advocate and patron of my death. Intercede with Mary for me that my death, if not so happy as thine, may at least be peaceful under the protection of Mary, my Advocate, and of thee my special patron. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

V. Pray for us, O holy Stanislaus,

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

O God, who amongst the other wonderful works of Thy wisdom, hast bestowed the grace of ripe holiness on them of tender years: grant, we beseech Thee, that we, following in the footsteps of blessed Stanislaus and redeeming the time by unremitting labor, may hasten to enter into our eternal rest. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days, once a day. plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if these prayers are said daily for a month with devotion (Pius IX, Rescript in his own hard, March 21, 1847; S. C. Ind., July 10, 1854; S. P. Ap., Dec. 5, 1931).

Approved prayers may be said on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar, according to Grant 21. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who on the memorial of any saint listed in the calendar recite in that saint’s honor the prayer taken from the Missal or another one approved by legitimate authority.

CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – XV. Saint Francis of Assisi, Confessor

516. Hymn - O divi amoris victima – O victim dear of heavenly love, Impurpled by thy fivefold sign, Saint Francis, father of the poor, Of Jesus’ Cross a living shrine.

Thou, burning with the glowing flames Of love of God and love of man, Dost yearn for Christ to shed thy blood And thrice dost try the seas to span.

Although denied thy heart's desire, Thou lettest not thine ardour wane; But kindled still with love divine To stir new fires thou strivest amain.

Still living in thine Orders three, Thou art found in many a savage clime; And frozen hearts, warmed at thy flame, Grow fervent with thy fire sublime.

So shalt thou crush the powers of hell, Thy conquering arms our foes dismay; When Holy Church doth seem to fail, Still is thy mighty strength her stay.

Come, help us, father, while we pray, Thy love within our hearts inspire, Thy boundless love, that spreads abroad The glowing brightness of its fire.

Praise we the Father and the Son, Praise we the Holy Paraclete: He grant us grace to emulate Our father's spirit, as is meet. Amen. (tr. C. E. Spence). An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this hymn is recited daily for a month (S. C. Ind., Sept. 13, 1893 S. P. Ap., Dec. 5, 1932)

Refer to the above (# 502) for the specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' regarding prayers in honor of the saints

CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. I “GENERAL DEVOTIONS TO THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN” – IX. Prayers

332. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we sigh, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Ah then, our Advocate, turn thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! (Roman Breviary).

An indulgence of 5 years. An indulgence of 7 years, every day in May. A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily recitation of this prayer. A plenary indulgence at the hour of death to be gained by those who have often recited this prayer during life, and who, after confession and Communion, or at least an act of contrition, shall invoke the holy Name of Jesus with their lips, if possible, or at least in their hearts, and accept death with resignation from the hand of God as the just punishment of sin (S. C. Ind., April 5, 1786; S. P. Ap., July 2, 1934 and Dec. 6, 1940)

This prayer, known as the ‘Hail Holy Queen,’ is specifically mentioned in the “Manuel of Indulgences”, under Grant 17. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer.

This concludes the Traditional Indulgences

Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.

In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
