Every practice may be eligible for a partial indulgence, if it is applied correctly, under one of the ‘General Grant’s 2, 3, or 4
Some spelling errors may be present.
Abbreviations that are found at the end of an indulgence prayer/practice (like S. P. Ap., and S. C. Ind.,) are, in essence, a specific ecclesiastical approval for a particular indulgence.
Traditional indulgences are ordered by their last date of approval.
CHAPTER I. “THE TRIUNE GOD” - I. Ejaculations and Invocations
28. Lord, I fear Thy justice, I implore Thy mercy; deliver me not to everlasting pains, grant that I may possess Thee in the midst of everlasting joys. An indulgence of 300 days (S. P. Ap., Dec. 18, 1940).
Usually, as in invocation, this would be placed under General Grant 1. However, under the newest grant added to the ‘Manuel of Indulgence,’ certain approved invocations may apply under that Grant. This grant is themed after ‘Divine Mercy.’ The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: a partial indulgence, granted to the faithful who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the merciful Lord Jesus a legitimately approved invocation.
CHAPTER III. “GOD THE SON” – Art. I. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST” – IV. Prayers
99. Jesus Christ my God, I adore Thee and thank Thee for all the graces Thou hast given me this day. I offer Thee my sleep and all the moments of this night, and I beseech Thee to keep me without sin. Wherefore I put myself within Thy sacred Side and under the mantle of our Lady, my Mother. Let Thy holy Angels stand about me and keep me in peace; and let Thy blessing be upon me (St. Alphonsus M. de' Liguori). The faithful who recite this prayer in the evening before falling asleep may gain: An indulgence of 3 years once a day; A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily devout repetition of the same (S. C. Ind., June 30, 1893; S. P. Ap., Dec. 18, 1935).
Every prayer may be eligible for a partial indulgence, under Grant 15. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who for their personal edification devoutly spend time in mental prayer.
CHAPTER IX. “FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS” – PART II. “IN FAVOR OF CERTAIN GROUPS OF PERSONS” – II.Prayers to be used by all clerics and others who aspire to the sacred ministry
732. Clerics to be ordained are granted on the day when they receive a major Order: A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions (S. P. Ap, Dec. 18, 1939).
Although new priests may gain a plenary indulgence when celebrating his first Mass, there is no indulgence for when he receives a major Order. Unless receiving a major Order and a priests first ass are the same thing, this traditional indulgence is “Notwithstanding”.
CHAPTER V. “THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY” – Art. II. “THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE B.V.M.” – I. Ejaculations and Invocations.
359. Thou art all fair, O Mary,
The original stain is not in thee.
Thou art the glory of Jerusalem,
Thou, the joy of Israel,
Thou, the great honor of our people
Thou, the advocate of sinners.
O Mary,
O Mary,
Virgin most prudent,
Mother most merciful,
Pray for us,
Intercede for us with our Lord Jesus Christ.
An indulgence of 500 days (S. C. Ind., Mar. 23, 1904; S. P. Ap., Dec. 19, 1936)
As has been mentioned before the difference between Ejaculations and Invocations is not exactly clear. And neither is the difference between Ejaculations and prayers. Therefore, because this seems to be long for an invocation, I would categorize this as more closely related to a prayer, under Grant 17 (because it has been “approved” at least once). The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly address the Blessed Virgin Mary with some approved prayer.
CHAPTER VII. - “THE SAINTS” – Art. IV “IN HONOR OF OTHER SAINTS” – LVII. SAINT THERESA OF THE CHILD JESUS, VIRGIN
575. A Devout Exercise - a) The faithful who devoutly recite thrice the doxology: Glory be to the Father, etc. together with the invocation: “Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, pray for me,” before an image of Saint Theresa, may gain: An indulgence of 300 days; A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, if this act of devotion is repeated daily for a month.
b) The faithful who devoutly visit a church or public oratory, or even a semi-public oratory (in the case of those who may lawfully use the latter), where the Feast of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus is being kept, may gain: A plenary indulgence, if, in addition, they make their confession, receive Holy Communion and pray for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff (S. P. Ap., Sept. 30, 1935 and Dec. 19, 1949).
Part a) would likely be covered under General Grant 1 for invocations, and/or Grant 15 regarding mental prayer.
Part b) is covered under Grant 33 regarding visits to locations on the feast of its Titular. The specific reference in the 'Manuel of Indulgences' is as follows: "A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit, and there devoutly recite an Our Father and the Creed [at] a minor basilica, a cathedral church, a parish church, an international, national, or diocesan shrine established by competent authority, on the solemnity of its Titular"
This concludes the Traditional Indulgences
Every prayer/practice that we evaluated today is taken from the last approved publication of the Raccolta. The Raccolta was once the official book/document/list of approved Indulgences. In its last publication there were 780+ individualized prayers/practices that were approved for gaining indulgences.
In 1967 indulgence practices were revised so that indulgences are now, today, granted more in the style of “category” of prayers/practices rather than individually. This leaves me with the question: how do the indulgenced prayers/practices from the Raccolta (traditional indulgence) line up with the indulgences of today? That question is what this “study” seeks to answer.
